Festivals in a game

Interesting ideas, gave me food for thought.

I recall trying to do something about this in a game I ran a couple of years ago. The occassion was something like an anniversary of a military victory, if I recall correctly, and there was a requisite speech to be given by the current figurehead of the kingdom. There was expected to be a large crowd turning out, and our PCs caught wind of an assassination plot. Stuff happened. Rioting ensued. I honestly don't recall whether the figurehead was saved or killed, but there was a large, disorganized combat scene where initiative rules basic amounted to bupkiss because of the chaotic milieu in which it took place.

Anyway, reading the column made me want to make sure that in the future I really played up the effects of various holidays and festivals in future games. Thanks.
