The State of this Column

Folks,

I wanted to offer a few comments on the state of this column rather than letting y'all think it had just died off.

Early this year, when I was working on my 10th or 11th entry for this column, I got an offer to publish it as a book. It wasn't actually the first such offer I got, but it was the first such offer that I got from a publisher that really excited me.

From that point until July I was increasingly working at two speeds: an article a week (and later, more) for the book, then polishing them for publication here once a month. Slowly, trying to maintain articles for two different publications got to be too much, and as you saw in May I switched up the type of history I was writing here, then things trailed off after that.

I currently have first (or better) drafts of 52 different histories, totaling almost 200,000 words, or about 4-5x more than was published here in the column. I'm at the moment between publishers for various reasons, but I hope to have a new deal hammered out soon, and to get back into polishing up the book for publication.

At this point, to give my publisher first rights, I'm not going to be publishing any more company histories here. However, as soon as I get done with the actual book I'm going to be returning here with a second generation history column, which will have more genre histories (like the one I already published on superheroes) and other things that will be complementary to the eventual publication.

In the meantime you can consider these histories as a preview of what should be a great book next year.

Cool beans. G'luck with it. I'll be interested to see what you have to say about FASA.

Hey Shannon;

How's the book coming along? Do you have a final deal inked out yet? I would imagine that even if you do, it's probably far too early for a release date or anything, but if there is anything you can talk about we'd love to hear it.

52 columns, eh?

I really hope you have Games Workshop in there somewhere for its games and related ones: Fighting Fantasy and Warhammer Fantasy Role-Play comes to mind!

I've enjoyed reading the column in the past and am also looking forward to hearing more information about the book - in addition to possibly owning a copy for my shelf one day.
