I live close to the sea cliff you mention in your column, the Serra da Arrabida. Some notes on the cliff:
As you write, it's covered with dark pines, cypresses and other trees, but that's on the land side. On the sea side it's covered with dense bushes, very hard to cross.
There are small beaches here and there. Some of these can't be reached by land, only by sea. There are also caves and grottos.
There are some old fishermen villages, but not many. These are located in beaches that can be reached by land.
The coastline has plenty of scope for adventuring. The caves and beaches are ideal hide places for smugglers and pirates. There is a couple of small monk monasteries in the seaside, halfway to the top of the range. The monks were of the reclusive type, searching the hardships and isolation that the place provided.
