For everyone who missed it the first time, I was just in my FLGS and there's a new printing of HoL out!!!! It only has 4 new pages but the book is a hoot to read (it's a 100% handwritten sorta post apocalyptic/sorta sci fi/sorta Paranoia but funnier RPG) and only 20 smackers. I'm very tempted to get it myself but I still have the first edition so I will pass. They also meantion thet they'll be reprinting the ONLY supplement, Buttery HoLsomeness.

HoL is a festival of freakyness. I would have gone nuts over this when I was 23 but now it seems kind of silly and needlessly nasty to me...
I`m getting old?

I am in love with the universe, and all is right in the world, for the foul beast HOL once more darkens my door. Or, it will, once I I get my grubby little paws on its physical form. But spiritually, I already own it.

What is this. . .HoL?

And man, if they really wanted to hit the ball out of the park they shoulda sold it with a "marbelized high school journal"-looking cover with the title scrawled across it...

HoL sounds cool, yes.

The problem is, I don't like having to wade through the handrwitten stuff - I like my text legible.

Then again, i think I'm missing the point.

I remember the fun I had reading the first book...

We tried to play once or twice and concluded it wasn't a game for playing so much as for reading.

Has anyone actually Played H.O.L.?

I've played H.O.L. once. I played The Man With No Name in a group that included Elvis, Led Pighp (the kid who hates babies, has a pet Waste-It and that friggin' huge gun) and that creepy child-molesting priest. The last PC burned through all of the Grace of God points in 15 minutes, and then got the Wrath of God upon him. Then the horde of Waste-Its came, and we were quite screwed.

The only thing funnier than H.O.L. is that Macho Women With Guns spoofed it with a joke PC sheet.

I actually have a dark serio-comedy campaigin I'd like to run with HoL.

For those wondering, it's being printed by the CaBil, and actually owned by Dirt-Merchant Games. We can only hope they make more suppliments: it's such a bizzare yet playable setting.

Heya.

My name is Bill Aguiar, and I am the publisher of the second edition of HoL

And yes, we are planning to rerelease Buttery Wholesomeness, but we're not quite sure of the timetable yet. We were hoping to have it out at the end of the year, but now it is looking like early 2003.

We do hope to include Freebase, yes. Barring a printer's bizarre desires.

We were at GenCon, but at the Wizard's Attic table of stuff.

There are four new pages, yes. One is the apology page. Can anyone else figure out what the other three are?

HOL is also short for "Hey! Oi! Leggo!"

Feel free to ask any other questions!

Hm. Well, it would be really cool if the chargen rules were included with the main HoL book. Just because, even as a "joke" game, it's eerily very playable. Just not *readable*.

Like he said, yeah. Thought that was standard internet gamer jargon, there.

To rephrase: "I really, really wish at least a basic version of the character generation bits from 'Buttery' were included with the main book to make it truly complete in my eyes, and HoL would swiftly become a replacement for Paranoia as the 'wacky change of pace' game for me."

Better?

The book has the Dirt Merchant logo on it, and the press releases have said "brought to you by the CaBil and Dirt Merchant Games", so I can only assume they are, in fact, working with Dirt Merchant games. But that's an assumtpion. ;)

It was capitalized, so I thought it was a really obscure game mechanic for a moment there, like charge variation or some such thing.

Including those bit will be considered if we every do a third edition of HoL. Maybe.

I am trying to stay close to the original vision of HoL, as articulated by the DMG folks. And yes, I am in constant contact with them over product issues. They had no idea that HoL had achieved cult status, long having left the gaming industry, and have to shoehorn HoL work amongst their full time jobs.

All new pages and the new cover were done by them, and the same will be for Buttery Wholesomeness.

There is some debate what will happen after Buttery, whether or not we will put out new material or what have you. Depends on sales, basically. If we do put out new material, the original HoL people will help oversee it, but probably will not contribute 100% of it, simply because of time issues.

So if you want more HoL, get more people to buy it!

I'm still waiting for my Deviants and Demi-guys supplement, as promised in the pages of HOL. And how about a fine fucking campaign book? Or at least an adventure, or something. Oh, and a really graphic, super-lewd, totally you-can't-take-this-in-public-ever nasty HOL gm screen, with all the standard mechanics pleasantly listed on the back? Also, where's my plush Wastem?

There are no current plans beyond Buttery. The goal for the time being is to get Buttery out, then see if the response is positive enough to put out more.

Plush Wastem? Hmm...

Seriously speaking? A plush wastem.

Hmmmm... I just don't know if it will be the same without the original dirt merchants. But who knows, maybe it'll work.

I could see adventures, sick, twisted and amusing yet still playable, as being really good. Maybe a series of smaller one's so you won't overstress those lazy dirt merchantsm or one big campaign book because you don't give a shit how those dirt merchants feel.

Also Deviants and Demi-guys the hol players guide featuring the actual, really real character creation rules, not just those silly charts.

HOL miniatures would be sweet, but that's probably a pipe dream.

The obvious choice would be regional sourcebooks, but that might be too close to a real RPG. Maybe combine this idea with the on three ideas up, and make Regional Adventures, each of which fleshes out a specific area, like the Diaper Swamps, or the Forest of Public Domain Orcs. Just so long as they're funny instead of just being usefull and informative.

HoL is pure genius, and the thought of new material, or even just getting my sweaty hands on a copy of Buttery HoLsomeness is giving me wood. I'd like a players' guide as well, but considering I'd buy Todd Shaughnessy used underwear my demographic information probably isn't all that useful.

Plush Wastem would be cool ... if it was economically feasible.

I think my favorite part of HOL was the freebase insert. (live action roleplaying in THE WORLD OF REALITY). The combination of transgresing boundries and d&d parody still gets me giggling.

I also liked the charts a lot.. they were a pain to follow sometimes but again Buttery Wholesomeness provides the comedy in those pages of charts.

Flipping through the books I notice my favorite parts involve smaller capsule wriitting.. I think the longer multiple paragraphs of settings tends to strain this style of comedy. I mean, a slayers guide to sodomy bikers would get old after a while, and so would a sourcebook devoted to one planet.

OTOH a galaxy guide might provide a fertile medium for charts, one-off jokes, and parody of star wars, trek, dune, nasa, whatever.

And I know this is probably heretical, but the hand written layout doesn't add anything to the commedy value for me. (the freebase insert was typed for instance). Making a book a chore to read just means it will be looked and enjoyed at less often, imo (It's a lost cause I know... at least the books aren't the page-layout nightmare that made some Kult supplements almost unreadable)

Ya know, this gives me an idea...why don't any supplements use the look of common text processors, like Word or something. Just amateur enough to give the right impression (especially if there are lots of redlining and crossing out throughout the books), but readable just the same...?

Plush wastem eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!

I picked up HoL three days ago as an impulse by in my FLGS. I have read it and I am not disatified. Now I want Butter HoLsomeness and anything else possible. At some point, I would like to run at least a one-shot game (well, more likely 3,588.5 shots and twice as many booms, but you know . . .).

And handwritten rules! Sure, it's a little hard at times, but it's just so perfect for the book.

Also, after the plush Wastem, we need a plush wastit, complete with the devil's gleam in its eye :D

Very much still in the tenative phase...
