View Full Version : America's Army Players?

Who else here still plays America's Army?
I was wondering about fellow RPG.netters who play, and also in the vein of the BF Vietnam games and the likes. Was thinking we should see about blowing each other away Modern Urban Combat wise at some point.

I've considered downloading it.
Although it IS about the army. (shudder)

I am finding I enjoy it more than any of the other FPSes about there. And hey, its free. Though I can understand your reservations.
The cool thing is you get one life. That's it. You die? you wait for the round to end. Some don't like it. I do. You generally have objectives. And that sort of thing.
The bad thing: Doesn't matter which side you are, YOUR team looks like the Army. The others like Terrorists. It does mean weapons are balanced, but when they die they drop AKs. Instead of the M16s they would have been using. You only see Aks too.
But really, that's a minor quibble.
Admittedly, you still get people pissing and moaning about Camping.
What might be bad for you: No tanks. Yet. I hear they are working on vehicles for the next patch though.

I used to play this back when it first came out. Recently DLed it again, but mah graphics were all wonky. It's a pretty decent game, though, especially considering the price.

One thing that makes it a lot harder than most other multiplayer FPS'es is the complete absence of nametags or anything else to signify what team someone is on.
Sure, when you're close enough, you see the difference...but when you see a small dark shape 200 meters away that seems to be aiming at you...you really need to know whether to pull the trigger or not.
Sure, it's realistic...but people tend to get upset when you shoot your teammates for the sixth time or so. :p

And keeps score of that crap too. :) Not only that, if you guess wrong and DON'T pull the trigger, and they do, you still lose points because you got killed.

Rather like Real Life. Just requires you pay attention when people report in... and report in yourself.

This doesn't exist in the real military? I thought it was against the Geneva Conventions or something.

PS: In my blessedly short experience with AA, people rarely, if ever, report in. Just like CS.

Or Ghost Recon. Or Operation: Flashpoint.

Except I never liked counter strike. Apples to Apples admittedly. But just a different feel to it I guess.
Edit adds: To me though, the constant respawn in games like even Call of Duty (Which I also love) really kills them after a time for me. It just makes it so people can rush in. It sickens me to see the players who get 80+ kills.... But died nearly as many times as they got a kill get heralded as such good players when other people can go 30 and 3 (or even 30 and 10! Its still a better contribution to the team) or some other such very good ratio and get called nothing but a Camper and hated by the community.
At least in the 1 life per round system the player has to have at least some skill to back it up (Luck too, admittedly. But that too is just like Real life. You're in the wrong place at the wrong time nothing is gonna save you).

I play AA and I love it. It's the best on-line multiplay FPS experience I've ever had: cheating is at a minimum, and the game isn't dominated by twitchy "kewl dewd" 13-year-old who love smacktalk.

That's a good selling point.
Almost enough to make up for the lack of armored vehicles...

A lot of the servers I've played on have been dominated by 11-year olds, who insist on giving the other players on the team orders by shouting into the microphone...despite the fact they're not the squad leader.
Oh, how I long for the days when it was possible to kill someone in a multiplayer game without being called a "NEWB FAGET"...

They're coming. They just introduced the Stryker APC. It's stationary for now, but it will be drivable soon (3 months?).

Maybe I've had a different experience because I strictly play on official servers.

Exactly what Kent said,
"Yet"
The next patch supposedly will have them moving.

Is a Mike even possible? I've been playing for a couple months now and not ONCE heard one. I don't even see how to use one in the menu...

They are going to add the Stryker in the next patch, so we shall see if that is a good move or not.

We used Roger Wilco or something similar when we played, but it was true, it wasn't integrated into the game.
With respect to the 'adult' nature of the gaming community - I did find a much higher level of responsibility, civility and adult activity on America's Army put to any other on-line game I've played. Put it this way, AA was the only game I'd consider booting up, joining an official server and playing - every other on-line games I only play with people I know because of the on-line community being a pain in the ass.
This does not mean it doesn't have it's problems, but theses tend to be based around the honour system - but it was quite new then - maybe they have got over that now as well.

*thread re-spawns*
So, who's still playing? I'm on pretty often. I play Bridge Crossing and Bridge SE almost exclusively (to the point where I don't know layouts of the other maps). AA now has the ability to add buddies, etc, so if we get a list together, we can start shooting bad guys together.

Also, mods? Can we get this moved to Video Games Open? It seems it's a relic from before the split.
