First, the news...

Morrigan Press, Inc. is pleased to announce that it has acquired the right to publish a role-playing game based upon Pocket Books’ forthcoming dark fantasy series, The Templar Chronicles.

Revolving around the adventures of Knight Commander Cade Williams and his Echo Team combat unit, the series is an action-oriented supernatural thriller in which the Templar Knights have been resurrected as a secret combat arm of the Vatican, charged with defending mankind from the supernatural. The first book, HERETIC, is due to be released from Pocket Books in July 2005 and is written by the Bram Stoker and International Horror Guild Award nominated author, Joseph Nassise. The current president of the Horror Writers Association, Joe has also been retained to write the game setting for Morrigan Press.

Morrigan Press will be releasing this exciting new sourcebook as a d20 Modern game setting. The planned 128 page hardcover will contain background setting material and new game mechanics, including new feats, skills, FX, game rules and character classes. A never-before published original short story featuring the characters from the series will also be included in the volume, which is expected to debut at Gencon 2005.

Founded in 2004, Morrigan Press is a privately held Canadian firm devoted to creating exciting settings and sourcebooks for the role-playing game industry. Their latest project, a role-playing game based upon the hit Showtime SF series, Jeremiah, will see publication in November through Mongoose Publishing. More information on this and other projects can be found at their website http://www.morriganrpg.com .

Second - the feedback...

When Morrigan first posted here looking for submissions, many of us had never heard of them. Since their website was undergoing reconstruction, it was ever harder to learn anything more short of emails from their president, Scott Agnew.

As I've just had the pleasure of negotiating this license agreement with them, I wanted to let those who were interested know that I've been impressed to date with their president, Scott Agnew, and their plans for the future. Scott was prompt in responding to my query, fair and equitable in the negotiation stage, and, in general, a nice guy to deal with.

I'm looking forward to working further with the firm as we move ahead on the Templar Chronicles setting and recommend them to others here.

Do these berks not know that the Templars are anti-papal? The Vatican split with the Merovingian predecessors of the Templars during the reign of Charlemagne...

It's called revisionism :) This world setting is likely drawing on the fact that the Poor Knights were initially instated by the Church and the Pope.

Thanks for the update Joseph. By the way I'm presently reading Riverwatch. Cool book :)

Still, it is an intriguing trend, the sudden appearance in the last few years of one book and movie after another dealing with the Templars and Masons...

Don't know what a "berk" is but I'm quite familiar with the true Templar history, actually.

Eric's correct - its an revisionist/alternate history style approach, where the Vatican blames the original disbandment and excommunication of the Order on the king of France's influence and agrees to reinstate it under certain conditions.

PS - Eric - glad you are enjoying Riverwatch. Drop me a note when you are done and let me know what you thought overall.

I was actually commenting on how professional the negotiations with the crew over at Morrigan were - something I thought freelancers might want to know as they have several open calls out on this board.
