My Campaign
Well… It started out somewhat different than I had planned and expected. The setting is a very low-magic Viking kingdom province beset by orcs and the internal struggles of the local nobility. It’s inaccessible in the winter. The only two races that are known by the inhabitants are orcs and humans. The other pc races do exist, but far away. I had hoped that the players would be humans. They didn’t. I had only met one of the players one time before the actual game had to begin so the introduction to the campaign was a bit of a “spur of the moment” thing.
The dale has been the scene for many a bloody battle. In the last 35 years or so it has been in the possession of the kingdom Gorunheim, conquered by the outlaw Ragnar Hyrikan. He was pardoned when he submitted the realm to the king of Gorunheim. 16 years after that, he died in a battle for the dale, but at that time his son, Torsten Hyrikan, lived to take over his father’s domain. It was parted after the initial conquest between Ragnar’s friends, but they died with him. Their bloodlines sent black-sheep-nobles to inherit the land the dead had left them, hoping they’d die in the next orc invasion.
Now they have spent about 20 years scheming against each other and now they wont endure any more.
On the other side of the planet the gnome ranger, Gobblenob, and his friend, the female gnome illusionists, Uda, were helping out a sick friend with bringing some supplies to the laboratory of other dimensions. They were in their home town “thetownneartheriverthroughwhichthereflowsonemillionlitresof watereveryhourandthebigforestconsistingofmanytrees” in “Thelandaroundthebigbloodymountain”. When they entered the laboratory an experiment went amiss and they were teleported to another place. In the middle of a big forest was the place they ended up in.
They walked a tad around not really knowing what to do. Then they heard some orcs. They hid although Uda accidentally left a bit of her clothes sticking out due to her lack of experience in woodlands. The leader of them told one of the other orcs to see what it was and Uda cast a ghost sound spell to distract it. It succeeded, but the, now somewhat cautious, orc leader told another orc to check Uda’s hiding place out. Uda proceeded casting colour spray downing two of the 6 orcs. Out of some bushes near Uda, three men, one with a flaming long sword the others with spears, charged the orcs and after a brief struggle the orcs had died after wounding one of the men and Gooblenob severely.
After the encounter they were brought to the patrol’s camp and interrogated. The leader was the son of Torsten Hyrikan, Hermod Hyrikan, who was leading a patrol in the eastern borderland of Grønnedal. The three came along well and he invited them home to his father’s manor. On their way they were introduced to some of the nobles in the dale. First they met the charismatic, but somewhat disturbing Od Nokohimkan, the lazy and overly jolly and fat Asbjørn Thuring. Uda got too much mead at his manor and tried to help herself with some homebrewed medicine giving her diarrhea instead of a mighty headache delaying them all a day making the way home to Hermod take eight days instead of seven.
All along the road whenever they rode through villages a crowd assembled with the sole purpose of watching them. The people had never before seen gnomes, but the presence of the noble and his hird were enough to make them do anything but stare at them.
They finally arrived at Torsten Hyrikans home and were led inside. They talked for quite a while and were trying to find out where they had ended up, but their efforts were in vain. The pair went on to try to discuss inventions but that turned out to be equally fruitless. They were told that they could discuss such matters with Ægil Jomlin or Eskild Hyrikan, two other nobles with an interest and a talent in matters of technical nature. Eskild had recently discovered a new vein of ore in an almost emptied mine, and the gnomes could possibly help.
Torsten borrowed them two ponies and his son asked two of his hird to follow them around to see to that they were safe. They rode to Ægil's manor, but didn't find him there. They did meet his second in command though who told them he was out and could be away for a while. They ate dinner and annoyed the staff so much with their inventions that the were allowed to have the workshop all by themselves. Ægil Jomlin arrived two days later.
To be continued.....
