I'm intrigued. Anyone ever play one of these?

I play Vs. regularly, it's all one game. It's fantastic, I can't recommend it enough. Pick up the Xmen vs. Brotherhood starter and give it a shot

I play it. I love it. I stopped playing Heroclix for it. Well, stopped buying, anyway. The art is fantastic and the mechanics are simple to learn. It's the first time in many many years that I've actually enjoyed the deck-building aspect of any card game. And, in my area, at least, it's widely played, so it's never a problem finding someone to play with.

There's a pro-circuit qualifier coming up... Wish me luck.

EDIT: And I love the fact that both the Marvel and DC sets are completely compatible. I can't wait 'til they release an Avengers set. I'm going to build a JLA/Avengers deck.

There's also a Spider-Man vs. Doc Ock starter, and a Batman vs. The Joker starter. The booster are: Marvel Origins and Web of Spider-Man (for Marvel) and DC Origins and Superman, Man of Steel (for DC. Superman isn't out yet, but releases in a couple of weeks. It's finishing being printed right now.)

I'd release what the next few sets are, but then I'd have to hunt you down a kill you. :) Plus I'd get fired. The good news is that there should be a public annoucement soon about the next Marvel set.

This is probably a backhanded compliment, but it sucked alot less then I thought it would. Still not really my cup of tea as im heavily invested in a few other CCG's, but not bad. I thought the strategy at first was a bit limited, but with more cards available now I imagine thats changed.

Alright, cool. I'll pick up one of the starter sets and see how things go. It looks like a fun game.

I'm sure you can't answer this, but it's worth a shot... How long will we have to wait for an Avengers expansion?

The one thing to keep in mind getting into this particular game is this:

The collation is quite possible the worst in the history of CCG's.

Not even joking. You can buy boxes and boxes and boxes and not have a playable set of Uncommons. UNCOMMONS. So if you're getting into it, bear that in mind. Most people pick one or two factions, and trade for them, giving up their good stuff from the other factions.

I've got several friends that do very well on the Pro Circuit, and that is the real draw for the serious CCGer's out there.

CHEAP PLUG: a much better CCG overall, IMNSHO, is the WWE CCG: Raw Deal. Good collation, balanced playing environment, cheap buy-in. Best CCG I've played. And I'm not just saying that because I'm the lead playtester or anything.

:-)

I played a demo at GenCon. The mechanics are solid and fun, more reminiscent of Magic than any other single game. I considered buying it, but the DC Origins set was (according to the rep) largely Batman stuff.

Really fun and easy game, mixing marvel and dc is easy too.
But Cryptonom is right, sorting sucks really bad. I play with some big money booster box buyers and they'll buy four or five boxes and still miss uber rare cards.

This is easily the best CCG in existence IMHO, yes there are collation problems but no more so than every other CCG ever made.

I wish I could, but I can't. :(

If you've followed any news from Fall Toy Show, there should be references to the next 2 sets....

DC Origins is:

Gotham Knights (Batman, Robin, Gotham PD, etc.)
Arkham Inmates (Joker, Penguin, etc.)
Teen Titans
League of Assassins (Ra's al'Ghul's group)
Fearsome Five

Now, the starters are Batman vs. The Joker, but there's enough for the other teams to get you going. Plus, Superman, Man of Steel will be released in a couple of weeks and that has teams from most of the Superman mythos.

The Batman starter doesn't really have any big cards in it, the Xmen vs. Brotherhood starter has the most cards you'll want to use when you build decks in it.

Tonight I had my ass handed to me by a Cosmic Spiderman deck. Twice.

Cosmic Spiderman must be stopped.

You mean a deck that runs multiple Spidermans at the same time with Scarlet Spider?

Yes, but with four copies of the 8 drop Spidey (Cosmic Spiderman) which gives Spiderman (which by that time is about five or six of the character cards in play) +1 ATK and +1 DEF for each opposing character in play. When my opponent got out Cosmic Spidey, all of his various and sundry Spideys became monsters. It was over for me.

Could someone briefly explain to me why Vs. is a great game? I played a very short demo at Gencon 2003, and was unimpressed, but the game was still under development at that point. (It was a "fixed" demo, with pre-sorted decks and a very rigid walkthrough.) Comparisons to other ccgs would be helpful. I'm trying to decide between Vs. and Wars at this point.

Second question: Is Vs. going to come out with sets for Image comics, etc, as well, or is it specifically DC and Marvel goodies? Oh, and is there a Vertigo expansion planned?

Well I can tell you this: Wars will cost you a small fortune. Decipher will have their hand in your pocket for the rest of your life if you buy into this. YOu might also consider that Decipher's playtesting is terrible.

I can't speak for Wars, as I haven't played it. I can tell you why I like Vs. For one, I love the art. The cards have a lot of original art created especially for the game by big time comic artists. Two, I'm familiar with the characters and settings, and that always makes it more fun. Three, I love the resource system. Unlike Magic, where you have to put a certain number of mana generating cards in play, and if you don't get them out fast enough, you're toast, in Vs., any card can be used as a resource. So you don't have to waste space in the deck with cards that have no other point other than generating resources. There are four types of cards: characters, equipment, plot twists, and locations. All four can be used as resources to pay the recruit cost for characters and equipment, and the threshold cost for other cards. On the plus side, even if you have used a plot twist as a resource, you can still play it, and, even after its effect resolves, it remains a resource. In short, even if you draw the worst hand ever, you can still play one resource per turn and get out your big cards later in the game.

That's just a few reasons why I like it. If I think of more, I'll post them later.

I don't believe Upper Deck has officially stated its intention to release cards based on anything other than DC and Marvel, but there are rumors flying around about Indy sets. I'm not getting my hopes up, but if it turns out to be true, and some day I can build a BPRD deck, well, after that I can die happy.

Any idea what the Marvel Knights expansion will entail, character wise? When will we be able to see card previews?

The first Superman set preview is out, it's 8 drop Doomsday

MK will have the classic characters from the comic books (Daredevil, Elektra, Dr. Strange, Blade, Kingpin, Dracula, Ghost Rider, etc) and a couple surprises. :)

As for previews, it'll probably be a few more weeks. We're just starting to roll out the Superman previews.
