as someone highly interested in musical subcultures (I actually kinda study that IRL), I've read that in Japan, there are certain people who like to run around as goths, put Marylin Manson posters on thier walls etc. but still listen to cheesy pop music and not what we'd consider gothic music.

I always thought that was a Japanese penomenom until I came to China three weeks ago. we went to a pub with a sign written in that medieval style of latin letters and they had M.Manson/ Slipknot/ Slyer pictures all over the place. the liveband üplayed soft-rock and the CDs during the brakes were American gangster rap albums

Um, what's your question? :)

If it's the name of the Japanese, um, 'movement' it's called 'Visual kei', but there's also the 'gothic lolita' thing going on too.

Some of the best heavy metal in the world comes out of Beijing. Take it from me, a fan of ambient music. :) Seriously, though, The Face, Battleaxe and Black Panther are all very good. None of them are really gothic, though. Chthonic (http://chthonic.org/), out of Taiwan, is full-on gothic/glam metal.
