Last night, I was playing Civ III on a huge map, using the Warhammer mod. I'm the Reikland, and on the random map Lahmia is next door. I'd invaded once before (started the game Friday night), and was gearing up for another invasion, planning to stop playing and go to bed right as I was ready to kick things off.

Then Lahmia declared war on the Dwarves, their neighbor on the opposite side from me. Ooh, I think, I'll just play a little longer, about four turns into the Lahmia-Dwarf war, and invade a little. Then I headed in, captured some settlers, took a town here, took a town there, captured a Wonder and Lahmia's source of horses.

And it was 1:30 in the morning, and I had to get up to go to work today.

The worst I've ever done is staying up to about 4 when I had to get up at 7. At least, that's the worst I've done since college...

What is it about One More Turn syndrome? Is there a support group for this? Is this like sex with stupid, pretty people - you know it's bad and wrong, but you can't stop because it feels so good?

Actually, as long as you can effectively gauge whether one more turn is worth it, it's normal. If you actually play all night, stay up and miss class/work by continuing to play, and finally crash sometime in the afternoon, tha'ts a problem.

Well, today I'm mildly groggy, and that's not good because I'm supposed to be managing people.

And I keep thinking about how I'm going to have to put an expeditionary force together to take out the Ironclaw Orcs... But I'm going to have to fight my daughter and wife for access to the computer, so I may not be able to start playing until 10, by which time my lack of sleep will really be catching up to me.

Maybe I should take up drugs. Those are self-limiting if you don't have extra money, right?

Man.. its all about the Lizardmen! Ribbitus Prime has no time for outsiders to interefer in his plans.

And there are many games with the 1 more turn syndrome. These would be the games one loves for years and years to come.

I never skipped work to play, but I have had nights where I've cut it off at 3 in the morning when I had to be at work at 7. On the weekends...well...let's just say that for about the first three or four months I had SMAC, I knew it was time to go to bed when it started getting dark again after being up all night and all day playing.
