View Full Version : Battlestar Galactica love
Because after watching the first three episodes I feel there can never to much of that :D
I love the way they took the characters and premise from the original series and twisted it to new, interesting ways, yet still providing some touch of nostalgia or at least familiarity.
But I'll start with the one thing that seriously bugs me - why do they have to cut the corners of each piece of paper? This is especially ridiculous for the computer print outs. The playing cards I like.
I also tend to miss Commander Adamas senatorial bearing from the original, but have to admit that the new character works a lot better in the current series.
But the real gold is how the characters are defined through their relationships with others. The whole cast of characters shown as a interweaved web is so much more believeable and all the conflicts being complicated and morally ambigous.
And of course, doctor Balthazar's "inner life" is so fascinating.
Battlestar Galactica real proves that older shows not only can have remakes, but that the remakes can easily surpress their antecedents. So I'm joining the hopeful wishes of other RPG.net members that other favorites (like V) will be revived.

I don't miss Lorne Green much. Edward James Olmos is a much better actor imo.
I have hardly seen the series itself. I think I have only seen 2 episodes. If not for DVD sets, I wouldn't have seen the miniseries either.

Anyone see Grace Park's (the girl who plays Boomer) photo shoot in Maxim magazine? Pretty hot stuff. . . :D

To paraphrase Ron Moore's blog: "There is a very specific reason for this. It certainly isn't just because somone on the set of the miniseries thought it would be an unusual design element." ;)

Yeah, I'm really liking the new Battlestar Galactica.
Between that, Stargate, Lost, and 24, TV doesn't seems so sucky at times.

OMG LINK PLZKTHX.
But yeah. The show does kick ass, even if the last 2 weeks have been a bit slow for my taste. Still had some OH SNAP! moments in them though.
Right now the only people who really seem to dislike BSG are the 70s nostalgia throwbacks who haven't moved on in a quarter century, and severe nitpickers who are spoiled that BSG attempts to be logical and as realistic as possible, yet want MORE. (You would figure what little sci fi TV there is would make people happy a show even THINKS about logic and realism, much less gives some service to it, but there ya go..)

I'm going to back up Bloodcat here and beg for links or pics of this photo shoot. I was a bit leary of the series at first, but I have to say that I am really loving it.

And let me tell you, the show is dead set dedicated to the ocatagon. From computer fed print outs, to picture frames, to books, to playing cards and CD roms, the octagon is everything in this show.
I think it must be some type of holy symbol for the colonies, but how or why it became the design asthetic it is...not the faintest.
Though the Octagon CD Rom was a nice touch, I must say.

Which is why I did a spit-take when Strega's recap over at televisionwithoutpity pointed out that the Cylon Wanted Posters that the President had on display -- had square corners.

I had thought the octagonal stuff was a nod to the designs from the original series. I kind of like it. It looks cool and does help remind the viewer that the people aren't from Earth's future, they're from somewhere else entirely. If there is a particular reason for it, all the better.

Despite an unprecedented amount of fanboy interest, reflected in many online petitions, the producers rejected the new designs for colonial flightsuits as "Too impractical"...
During the subsequent great internet uprising of late 2005, the producers were saved from execution only by pointing out that Jamie Bamber would have had to wear the same thing as the uniforms are unisex.

Yep. I read that as well.
Strega takes no prisoners with her reviews, but they are a blast to read and I love her insights.

... Whereupon they were immediately strung up by Galactica's largely female-skewing (apparently) fanbase.
"Fanboys be damned," they chanted, "show us the muscles!"

If that were true, surely they'd all be wanting Baltar to enlist? :)

From what I've observed, the reactions have been:
Baltar = "eew! Greasy hair! Try some shampoo, loser!"
Apollo = "Whoah! Look at those guns! More sleeveless t-shirts, plz!"
Helo = "Whoah! When's the sex scene?"
Gaeta = "Cute. But so gay. But cute."
Fortunately, no opinions on Tigh and Adama. Of course, even Adama knows that anyone interested in him is obviously a Cylon replicant, so no surprise there...

I guess, just as seventies sci-fi was all about hexagons, early 21st century sci-fi is all about octagons....
I'm impressed with the show too, and curious to see where everything is heading. One thing I especially like is that they don't shy away from one of the core implications of the setup (and which the original show kinda softpedaled) - that these are the *last* remnants of humanity, and it's a pretty desperate situation.

Interesting. From comments I'd read elsewhere, and the odd female member of staff in my office who watches it, I'd assumed that Gaius "Oooh, he's a bad boy" Baltar was outdoing Lee "I am cute and occassionally wear sleeveless shirts, mother me" Adama on the popularity score, ladies-wise.

Seconded.
"I had to do this one sex scene for Battlestar that wasn’t a bedroom scene. It was outside in a forest under a lightning-and-thunder shower. I was like, 'So you want some crazy forest sex? OK, I gotcha.' In the end, they had to totally edit it down and take out all my moaning."
It is now official: I LOVE HER.

Heh. At least over at TV Without Pity, all the ladies are swooning over Tyrol, Helo, and Apollo. (Poor Gaeta is known as Lt. Gaydar over there. Normally I would put it to fangirl Yaoi overdrive, but they kinda have a point. He does seem to worship Baltar a bit more than should be healthy.)
That's fine. Boomer is the hawtzor to be sure, but Starbuck is what I am talking about. She just does it for me.

By Your Command, Baby! :D
After seeing two-thirds of the show, some comments:
Starbuck is hawt, but after "Flesh and Bones" I am so afraid of her.
Dr. Baltar needs to lock the door before playing with himself.
So the fleet is recreating their mythical past? And the cylons seem to be steering them. Why? Do they have actual foresight or is it a computational projection or wild guess? Or only an experiment?
The idea of the one God (cosmic consciousnes?) opposed with the politeistic beliefs of the colonist.
Damn this show is good! :D
