There.
I said it.
I normally listen to NPR on the way into work, but the new car has a badass stereo, and the CD was in the player, and I listened to it right through.
I have trouble listening to music around the house- I get distracted, can't apreciate it, don't pay attention... but driving is just the right mix of physical action and visual attention to really allow me to enjoy music.
And the Garden State soundtrack is effing amazing.

Loved the movie, and I noticed the songs were quite good during it, so I will have to check it out. I am in the same boat as you as far as listening goes. the car is the best place, becuase you can focus all your attention on what you are listening to, and ignore the asshats on the road all around you :)

Yeah, it is a good soundtrack. I likes it. If you're interested, you should check out some of the full length albums from some of the bands who contributed tracks. I would recommend The Shins.

Oh yes- this is one of the reasons I like soundtracks... they are good samplers.

The Shins do indeed rock on toast.

I almost cried in the theater when they brought on The Only Living Boy in New York, the most under-appreciate Simon & Garfunkle song. It was used to tremendous effect.
Love that song.

The Garden State soundtrack is amazing.
It is also depressing as hell.
I'm amazed Zach Braff hasn't chewed on a bullet, if that music goes into his head and that movie came out.

It's funny- I think it is melancholy, but hopeful.
Pretty much like the film.

I agree 100%. It's a fantastic album. My favorite song has to be "Let Go" by Frou Frou. I'm usualy the one to buy music at my house. My wife just listens to anything I buy. With the GS soundtrak it was different. She actively asked for the CD and now it permanently resides in her car. Thank God I have I tunes.
Speaking of soundtracks, another movie that featured great music is "Closer". It's a different vibe than GS but no less noteworthy. I don't think they've released an album for it. Most (if not all) of the music appears on the Damien Rice album "O". If you happen to see the movie (and I highly recommend you do) take special note of the very last scene in the movie and how masterfully the music is tied to it. The song is called "Blower's Daughter". Fantastic. If you are curious you can listen to the entire song on Rice's website (http://www.damienrice.com).

The Frou Frou (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00006EXLQ/qid=1109375028/sr=8-1/ref=pd_bbs_1/102-8770103-5752945?v=glance&s=music&n=507846) album (called "Details") is frickin' amazing. If you thought Let Go was good, you'd love the rest of it. (then again, anything with Imogen Heap (the female singer) is good - she did a now hard-to-find solo album before she joined Frou Frou called "I, Megaphone (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B000007Q91/qid=1109375074/sr=8-1/ref=pd_bbs_1/102-8770103-5752945?v=glance&s=music&n=507846)' which is similarly awesome).
You may want to check out The Postal Service (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B000089CJI/qid=1109374944/sr=8-1/ref=pd_bbs_1/102-8770103-5752945?v=glance&s=music&n=507846)'s album "Give Up" too, which is where the original (and vastly superior IMO) version of "Such Great Heights" can be found. It's all beepy and technoy though, nothing like the acoustic version that appeared on the soundtrack. But it's a very fine album (sounds very vaguely like the beepy music on Life Aquatic, if you've seen that movie)

So what sort of stuff is on it? For those of us who haven't seen the film, what's so great about the soundtrack?

Garden State - for the benefit of Mikey Boy - since it ain't out 'round 'ere yet, is the other great indie romantic movie of last year. It stars Zach Braff, the lead actor in "Scrubs" in a rather more melancholy and downbeat - though very funny and often slapstick - movie about depression, love and life. Having watched it a few times and taken my precious R1 DVD of it back with me from Canada, I can say it isn't perfect, but its damn impressive, even though made on a shoe string budget (2-4 million, roughtly) and managed to snag Natalie Portman for cheap. The soundtrack was also assembled for cheap. Mr. Braff mailed the script and a proposed soundtrack CD to each of the artists in question noting which songs go where and asking for permission. By and large, he got it.
The movie is meant to be released in Ireland next month, but the Irish censor has apparently got annoyed at the uh, hotel sequence. The one with Method Man. Yeah, that one. I thought it was just peculiar and generally harmless.
The other great indie romantic movie was Before Sunset, the poignant and pitch perfect sequel to Before Sunrise.
The music is vaguely alternative downbeat music. The soundtrack album starts with Coldplay's "don't panic" moving through The Shins (who are unknown on this side of the world - at least until I have finished beating everyone up and making them listen to the soundtrack), Simon and Garfunkle, Nick Drake and Frou Frou.
The song "Such Great Heights" by the Postal Service is used on the trailer - go to Apple.com and download it. Some of the other garden state soundtrack songs have appeared in episodes of Scrubs...hinting that Zach Braff isn't just the star and occassional director.
Such Great Heights is my current favourite songs. I love how its used on the trailer, and I love the downbeat acoustic cover by Iron and Wine in the movie. A very romantic moment, but also one made imperfect by unfinished business and a strange sense of loneliness. Very human and effective.

the postal service = death cab for cutie + DNTEL
DNTEL is pure electronica. that's why you got the BEEP BEEP music.
it's funny you complained, because i thought iron and wine's version was way too "joanna newsom" folksy.
