None of my players are familiar with the THS setting and only one of them knows the GURPS rules set, so I decided that I had better start them off with a fairly straightforward monster hunt in a big derelict facility...

You can read a quick summary of the adventure here: http://forum.rpg.net/showthread.php?t=188099

I had written up six pre-generated characters for this introductory adventure and finally ended up with five players. Four of them chose to play one of my pre-generated characters (Harpreet the human team leader, Alex the Felicia II combat bioroid, Hikaru the SAI electronics expert and Robin the zoologist) and the fifth chose to generate his own character, Savannah Palanciano, a Ecuadorian marine who had been killed in combat and ended up uploaded into a second hand cyberdoll body and decided to study martial arts...

Play started a bit later than planned, so I served food and ran through a quick briefing session for anyone who hadn't read the handout while we were waiting for the stragglers to arrive.

The team decided to enter the complex through the submarine bay in the lower level. They drove their mini-subs up through the access port and left them in the lower vehicle bay, camouflaged among the abandoned vehicles there. They then split into two teams, with Hikaru and Savannah heading south to the mechanical engineering section and the others heading west to try and gain access to the nearest airlocks up to the next level. Both teams found their progress blocked by a large mass of some kind of white coral like substance filling the south-east quadrant of the base.

Up until this point the group seemed to be fairly well organised and there was a minimum of out of character chatter, however, once the team was split in two there was too much time when one group didn't have anything to do and ended up talking out of character, which made it difficult to generate atmosphere.

Robin examined the substance and found that it was mostly made of calcium and had small tubes running through it, like coral, but that there were no living coral polyps or worms inside it.

Harpreet sent a cyberswarm into the coral to explore it, but they didn't return. Meanwhile The infomorphs had started to explore the tissue synthesis lab and genetics section. Hikaru recovered some data disks from the tissue synthesis computers which looked as though they were still intact and then they found a corpse floating in the next room, apparently killed with multiple small stab wounds.

The corpse was dressed in civilian diving gear with Vietnamese labels. They found an empty pistol floating nearby and several bullet holes in the walls. A search of the next room showed more bullet holes and some severed fingers, possibly belonging to the corpse and apparently not more than a few hours old. Hikaru took the fingers and sealed them in a small container from the lab. Hikaru also recovered a fragment of claw from the vertebrae of the corpse.

The biosapient team then decided to retrieve some cutting gear from the mechanical storage room to the south and cut their way through the life support unit and up via the airlock. Around this time, Alex went to join Hikaru in the genetics area, while Savannah joined up with Robin and Harpreet. Alex took the virtual interface visor from the corpse, hoping to be able to access the data on it later.

Eventually the whole team were assembled at the airlock and Hikaru took over the task of cutting through the doors. When the airlock was finally opened, they found an air pocket inside with the mummified corpse of an electrician who had apparently been trapped in there since the base was abandoned. Alex took his identity badge and the team carried on cutting, soon gaining access to the next level.

I probably wasted a chance to get a more serious mood going for the session at his point. The mummified corpse seemed to get quite a reaction and the team were all grouped together. I was feeling a bit distracted though, since I was struggling with my notes at this point and didn't really sieze the opportunity.

The next level was also flooded. They didn't spend much time in this area, just entering the central chamber, noting another mass of the coral like growth in the east corridor and then forcing their way up the elevator shaft to the dock level.

The dock level was the first area of the base they had encountered which was mostly above water. The base had settled slightly to the east, so the central area had about a foot of water in it. Exploring carefully and stealthily, they overheard two voices whispering in Vietnamese. Alex spotted two figures lurking behind a crate next to the cargo elevator. The team decided that these were probably Blue Shadow terrorists, so decided to attack them. Savannah took the north corridor and circled around, after telling Alex to give her cover in eight minutes time.

In retrospect, I probably should have anticipated that this encounter would end in carnage, but I wasn't quite ready for Savannnah's next move.

At the moment her interface told her Savannah had left eight minutes ago, Alex threw a hot prismatic smoke grenade down the corridor, totally blocking all vision around the junction that the two figures were occupying. Savannah then charged the two with her katana (totally blinded by the smoke) while Hikaru and Robin used the cover of the smoke to advance to cover near the vehicle maintenance bay and Alex ran down the corridor towards the fight.

Unable to see who was attacking them, one of the Vietnamese panicked and fired wildly with his PDW, hitting his colleague in the chest. Savannah tried to locate him in the smoke by the sound of his weapon, but was unable to land a solid hit with her katana before a stray round hit her in the left arm damaging it fairly badly (five hit points lost). In response she finally managed to hit the man who had shot her, severing his arm with a blow from her sword and sending it flying past Alex. She then stabbed her opponent several times while he was lying on the floor screaming, finishing him off.

When the smoke cleared the team found the surviving Vietnamese man lying on the floor clutching his chest wound. Alex pulled out her medical kit and managed to stabilise him while Hikaru did hir best to patch up Savannah (restoring 1 Hit Point with a mechanic roll).

They then interrogated their prisoner, who told them that he was a scientist working for the Vietnamese government. Harpreet thought that he was almost certainly telling the truth (or at least what he believed to be the truth). He explained that his team had set up a sealed area in the second level between the cold storage facility and the west security station. He said that they had tried to prevent the crabs from gaining access to their area but that they had forced their way in and killed several researchers, before suddenly retreating back towards the east side of the complex. Questioned further about the crabs, he said that two years ago another team had examined them and studied their behaviour patterns, but that between then and now the crabs had changed their behaviour and were now more aggressive and dangerous.

He told them that three members of his eight man team had now been killed, leaving four unaccounted for. One of them had tried to get to their transport boat in the north dock, but he didn't know if he had made it. The team decided to find out, so they headed around the circular corridor towards the north dock, taking their prisoner with them.

At this point we decided to end the session, since it was getting late (later than I had intended to play) and it seemed like a natural break.

In game, my major problem was that I wasn't really able to roleplay the NPC convincingly (didn't have any notes on his personality, so I had to wing it, which I'm not very good at) and the players didn't really seem to get in character much (not sure if this is a problem of them not really liking the pre-generated characters all that much or just how the session went).

I'm going to see the group later tonigh anyway, so I'll try to get some opinions on what I can do to make the next session better then.

Interesting, thanks also for posting the stuff you did wrong - we all make those mistakes but it's useful to see them flagged because next time I'm about to make one of them I might remember your thoughts and so avoid it.

Helpful and interesting stuff.

Session Two

The group was a bit more organised this time, with everyone arriving within thirty minutes of each other and generally less out of character chatter.

We started off with a quick summary of where we had left the last session and then I asked them to give me a marching order. They split up with Alex scouting out front, Hikaru at the rear (since he can look and shoot in two directions at once) and the other four (including the NPC prisoner, Dr. Tang Van Dac Kien) in a bunch between them.

(I had initially worried that someone would notice an error with my Asian names, but should have worried more about the fact that nobody could remember or pronounce them, leading to the PCs dubbing their prisoner 'the Vietnamese guy' and every other NPC as 'the one who got stabbed', 'the one who got eaten', etc.)

There was a sound of explosions and gunfire to the East, and Alex managed to identify that there were four Chinese assault rifles and some mini grenades going off, apparently falling back in bounding over-watch along the corridor heading towards the team (she has a hearing roll of 17 and rolled a critical success, as well as being an experienced soldier, so it seemed reasonable to give her a lot of information). Guessing (with startling accuracy) that this was probably a Chinese naval commando squad running into the crabs, they took shelter in a store room for half an hour, listening for encrypted radio transmissions, until they were fairly confident that any danger had passed.

Emerging from the store room, they decided to double back and try to access the Vietnamese research facility to grab any samples and information they could. Savannah scouted to the north dock junction and saw that the Chinese had apparently barricaded the corridor, by closing a gate across it and firing tangler grenades to seal it off, while the rest of the team headed south to the elevator. On the way, they noticed that the corpse of 'the one who got stabbed' (AKA senior electrical engineer Chu Quang Trong) had been partially eaten.

They donned scuba gear again and went down into the section that the Vietnamese had pumped dry. They found it half flooded, with signs of battle damage and several crab corpses floating in the water. Through interrogating Dr. Tang, looking at the remains and reading research notes they determined that there were two distinct 'types' of crabs and possibly some morphological variation within the types. They recovered a couple of fairly intact 'yellow' type crabs, but could find any samples of the newer, more aggressive 'pink' type.

They then decided to head over to the area where the Chinese squad had been firing, hoping to recover some samples of this other type of crab. On the way they agreed that it would be best to kill the Chinese squad to prevent them taking samples and then persuade the frigate to blow up the facility to destroy the evidence.

Using their cutting equipment from the lower level, they made short work of the barricade, heading east into the half flooded corridor beyond as stealthily as they could. They had a bit of a false alarm when they mistook a plume of hot water coming up from a hole in the floor (caused by one of the Chinese grenades, although they didn't realise that) for an enemy. This lead to Alex almost falling in, being saved by her Felica series 'perfect balance' advantage. A quick scan of the hole revealed that there seemed to be some kind of crab activity inside.

At this point they intercepted another burst of radio activity from behind them and Savannah and Alex went back to check it out. They saw a group of Chinese combat bioroids inspecting the damage to the barricade and then a two man fire-team headed into the corridor after them. Savannah took cover by the simple tactic of submerging herself flat in the murky water and lying motionless, while Alex moved back towards the rest of the party, using her tight beam communicator to alert them.

Robin, Harpreet and Tang hid in one of the rooms off to the side, while Alex and Hikaru tried to camouflage themselves in the corridor (Hikaru, being a tube like machine, attached himself to the ceiling and imitated a piece of piping). Meanwhile Savannah followed the bioroids, moving stealthily underwater.

The two bioroids spotted Alex and levelled their rifles at her, telling her to drop her weapon and put her hands up. Being PCs, the team decided that this was an ideal moment to launch an attack, so Alex used fast draw skill to pull two pistols, Hikaru lunged out of the ceiling (prompting me to scream 'they're coming out of the god-damn walls' in a Chinese accent... I guess it was funny at the time) and Savannah stood up behind them to attack them with he katana. Alex made a spectacular fast draw roll and had a better basic speed than the bioroids, so I ruled that she could get a couple of shots off before they had a chance to fire. She blazed away, managing to hit one of them in the foot, crippling him and knocking him to the floor screaming. The other bioroid didn't manage to shoot anyone before Savannah decapitated him with a single blow from the katana. Hikaru finished off the wounded bioroid by grabbing his head, crushing it and then throwing him into the hole in the floor.

Robin, Harpreet and the now panic struck Dr. Tang emerged from their hiding place, Harpreet restraining the prisoner, while Robin prepared a containment tube to hold one of the crabs which they expected to be drawn to the noise and blood in the water.

Sure enough a couple of 'pink' type soldier-scout crabs emerged from the hole. Savannah grabbed one of them and threw it into Alex's tube, while the team started heading back West before more crabs showed up. Hikaru used a PDW to blast the first wave of crabs through the hole while everyone else legged it. Alex decided to use a frag grenade to blow up the hole, hopefully collapsing it or at least slowing the crabs down, but her player managed to roll a triple six and the grenade went off at her feet. Fortunately, she was wearing a nanoweave drysuit and escaped with a full body bruise (7 Hit Points) and everyone else took only incidental damage (1 Hit Point each for Harpreet and Robin).

Robin was the first to reach the junction, realising that it was a likely ambush point for the Chinese just before he exposed himself. An incautious laser sight dot confirmed his suspicions. The party bunched up in cover, with Hikaru lagging behind to hold up the advancing crab swarms (which weren't a massive threat to him, being rather heavily armoured and able to climb along the ceiling). Savannah took the lead, sticking a captured assault carbine around the corner and spraying suppressing fire at the the two Chinese troops, while the other members of the team ran across the corridor, firing as they went.

Savannah was hit in the arm but, being a cybershell, managed to get away without a crippling injury (5 Hit points to the right arm) and the bioroid who had shot her wasn't so lucky, having his left arm pretty much blown off by her return fire (I think it was about twenty points of damage, but I can't seem to find my notes to make sure – he failed a HT roll and passed out from shock anyway). Alex and Robin failed to hit with their pistols, but Harpreet nailed the other bioroid in the chest with a 10mm High Explosive round, knocking him down and out of cover, where Savannah finished him off with a burst to the legs and groin.

The three organic members of the squad (plus their prisoner) ran to the south to reach the elevator down to the next level, putting their scuba gear on as they went, while Savannah and Hikaru dragged the Chinese corpses over to the junction to serve as a meal for the crabs (both to cover up the evidence that they shot them and to slow the crabs down), before catching them up.

Everyone swam quickly back down the holes they had earlier cut through to the sub bay. On the way Hikaru compiled a course and movement pattern for the NAI piloting the second mini-sub to make it imitate a torpedo being launched from the complex towards the nearby Chinese frigate, hoping that the Chinese would retaliate with heavy weapons.

The remaining sub only had room for four inside, so Hikaru and Savannah hung on to the outside of the hull as Harpreet guided them skilfully through the wreckage underneath the facility. Ten minutes after they had cleared the sub bay, they picked up the sound of explosions as the Chinese ship destroyed the other sub and then fired on the complex with it's heavy guns.

Overall, I think that the group did better than expected. Although they didn't manage to uncover most of the backstory, they did accomplish all the mission objectives which were possible to achieve. Since we had finished fairly early, I had a quick discussion of what people though of the adventure and what they would like to see in the next one. The general consensus seemed to be that they wanted more investigation and some exploration of the setting.

Sounds like fun. I should check out the Transhuman Space books...

This game doesn't really do the setting justice... the scenario could happen in any sci-fi setting. I'm going to try and come up with something a bit more unique to THS for the next game.

Flip the crabs over and strike for massive damage!
