Hi everyone,
Here's a personal piece I did recently in warm up for starting work on a particular game, which I won't divulge details about here, as its still in the early stages. I do own the copyright on the sketch though!
Hope you like!
(for the record, it's a pencil sketch, scanned and then layered up with textures in a Corel application, and then finished in Painter)

Jon, that is outstanding.
Not how *I* pictured Hawkmoon personaes. But hey, it is as valid as anything anyone else could do.
For the record, I picture the Hawkmoon stuff much more 'baroque'... i guess. Lots of armor and inlay and massive standards and war machines. The lances that are described, Baron Brass and all that. Of course, I read Hawkmoon about 15 years ago.
Still, a damn fine illo. I'm very impressed.

Thanks Storn!
I agree about the baroque thing, definately. I'm actually gently pushing for that in the game, as far as I am able to influence anything.
This one is quite a reflective piece, so I didn't go too mad with the armour and so on - in the original sketch there was a LOT more detail, but once I started splashing the black about, it just took over, and I felt it worked.
(NB: Storn replied to my original post moments after I put it up, before I edited it to take out some copyright sensitive information - not desperately sensitive, but I wanted to play it safe! Sorry if I lost a bit of your sense in my edit Storn, but I got an attack of legal discretion!)

Here's the original pen drawing I did many years ago now, that probably secured the gig - its been running and running this one - but which was also the basis for the illo above:

He reminds me of the master from Dr Who. Ridin' around in his crazy pillar. I like dark stuff. Do you use a tablet?
Seeing everyone posting work in progress I've just realised I've no more paying work on, I've been looking to do comic stuff and I've got more than I know what to do with. I was warming up last night as well for a comic project I'm doing. I'll post it on F.A.L. group when I've made it smaller to post. You'll probably be the only one to recognise who it is.
trying to keep up

Gundamit! That's really cool. I know nothing about hawkmoon, or what have you, but I'm sure they'll be pleased. I found the fellows features and the background of particular interest.
I know, I'm a pervert.

Jon , once again you knock me socks off! You're good, damn good, on both pieces. I take it it's a Moorcock theme, Corum stuff, isn't it? Anyway, love it! Got anymore?
Apart from Painter, what else from Corel's formidable array did you use?
Thanks for this,
Eric

Thanks, everyone!
Just to clarify, as I still feel a bit bad for editing out details from the first post - The major worry was a sudden fear that I can't go posting illos of well known authors' characters, but at the end of the day this is an uncommissioned piece of fan art, drawn in warm up for the "Elric!" supplement "Hawkmoon".
Enough said.
Murph: thanks, I think the Master is a good archetype for the kind of character this bloke is. I was thinking about Alan Rickman as well. Yep, I do use a tablet - I foolhardily spent my last pennies on a cheap little one last year, and it's really paid for its self many times over. I was quite good with a mouse, but my little tablet is really helpful (no Prozac jokes, please). It came in a bundle with Painter Classic for about £80. Looking forward to seeeing the comic work - we need to encourage more FAL members to post stuff. Far too many lurkers over there! It takes guts to put your stuff up for discussion, but its guts we all need if we're going to see more stuff in print! Cheers!
Steve - Hawkmoon rocks - I'd recommend them - they're pretty pulpy, in the best possible way! Cheers for the observations!
Eric: Thanks again! I only have Corel Photo Paint ver 8, which I use because it was free! I really want/need to pick up a copy of Photoshop 6 (sorry Corel!), but the budget is a bit tight at the minute! I'll post more when I have them!
