View Full Version : [Caffeinated Beverage]: Mountain Dew, reviewed by Alex deMorris (4/4)

Alex deMorris's Summary:

Since having appeared in the 1940s, Mountain Dew has somehow worked its way into being a staple at the gaming table, alongside that bag of chips and tub of salsa. Most gamers swear by its crisp citrus taste and its golden color.

No, I'm not arguing about the rating itself, exactly. I don't drink soft drinks all that often, so I'm pretty ambivalent on the quality issue. It's just that... well, seeing Mountain Dew described as "meaty" is just making me sick to my stomach.

I'm going to go throw up now.

First off, there's no real detail here. Did you even TRY to dissolve a penny in it, or is this merely posing as a playtest review? How about feeding a six pack of it to a toddler just before bed time? This is an incredibly slipshod review and I am once again appalled at the low standard of quality running rampant at RPG.net

Also, leaving out your own professional biases as a disgruntled ex-Coca-Cola employee smacks of a desire to conceal an essential fact from the reader.

You deserve to be whipped with pipe cleaners, and your head and eyebrows shaved. This review made me question the existence of God.

A fine substitute is "Diet Citrus Drop" sold at the chain of Kroger supermarkets throughout much of the midwest. God knows what they put in it, but I think the liquid crack will strip paint.

I'm sorry about the substance rating, but "Ballsy!" wasn't an option, and I've only had one beverage that would rate a 5/5 (RC Draft Cola, the best of the best, period).

The only diet soda with caffeine that is worth drinking is Diet Dr. Pepper... of course dr.p is an aquired taste. I love it, but can't stomache cream soda, root beer, birch beer, vanilla coke, and the most disgusting beverage known to man, MOXIE (all you "MAINEiacs")... next to the latino favorite Malta of course. Ulhch! One that people forget that is quit popular with my groups health conscience individuals would be Fresca... If you ever find yourself in an area neer Portuguese or Brazilians see if you can score some Sumol, that stuff is the most amazing non-alcoholic beverage!

Actually, my diabetic little brother is kind of happy with his Diet Dews (Reg and Code Red), he jokes when I visit and put the "real" thing in the fridge.

Diet sodas are only for those wanting to cut calories, but those who need to worry about their sugar intakes.

You can put Bundaberg Ginger Beer from Australia in that 5/5 group too. But I don't know if you get it in the USA.

And you're dead right about Royal Crown Cola.

Sadly, the canadian version of Mountain Dew lacks the caffiene, thanks to government regulation (here, you can't caffinate something that doesn't naturally have it already - so coke or chocolate are okay to caffinate, but not the dew).

Also, there's a slight taste difference. American Dew has more bite.

Don't know if we have similar regulations here down under, but our Dew sounds the same as yours - tangy, citrusy, but no caffiene.

I still swear by the stuff, though I don't know if I would if it were caffienated... As a side note, all those American Mountain Dew commercials (you know, with Jacki Chan and Andre Agassi etc. and those three dudes) are edited to be ads for Pepsi Max instead. Pepsi Max is Pepsi with more caffiene and no sugar.

Especialy for those long nights when your watching ninja movies and don't want to get up to go to the bathroom.

But be sure that you label the ones you pee in so you don't ge confused because let me tell you it takes like a week to get that taste out of your mouth otherwise...

Personally, I preffer Sams Club Mountain Lightning. It is sweeter and has a bit more carbination.

It's probably the colosest to a "generic" soda out there, there is just so much more you can do with it than Mountain Dew.

I know, Sams isn't as focused on sodas, as other products, but...

Yes I have, and I'm pretty much in agreement with you. The problem is that my mind is <u>combining</u> the real taste of Mountain Dew with the taste of meat when I read that rating. The result is unhappy.

Actually Diet Pepsi isn't bad if you don't think of it as Pepsi Alternate, but its own drink. Approach it like drinking coffee; its supposed to be disgusting, and drink it for a while and you may end up liking it.

Diet Dr. P is so bad that I could not even try to acclimate myself to it.

If I had a choice I would have stuck to the real stuff, but while I can do some, too much and the low blood sugar kicks in.

BTW, Barq's Root Beer is very good.

And let's raise a glass to my favorite chemical sludge, Diet Pepsi. Yay!

I'm more of a Dr. Pepper fan myself, though I admittedly wouldn't give it a 5/5.
Others that I like are...

-Mountain Dew Code Red (good for a change, but not something I would want to drink regularly. Reminds me of the short-lived (at least around here), Cherry Crush
-lemon-lime Squirt (again, just for a change)
-Mr. Pibb (hey, when you can't have REAL Dr. Pepper...though it does seem to have a slightly creamier taste)
-Tropical Sprite (same as Code red & Squirt)
-Vanilla Pepsi (Seems to have less of an a
aftertaste as Vanilla Coke, at least from what times I've tried it)
-Diet 7up (hey, if your forced to drink diet, might as well be the best tasting one out there IMO)

Cherry colas are tasty(I preffered Cheerwine, which was bottled by 7up), but they tend to give me heartburn.

I dunno, as for RC cola, it takes good, but it just seems to make my teeth feel gritty.

well, what can I say? Of COURSE it tastes worse than regular soda... But i'd rather not take in 1500 calories on a 2 liter.

Regular Diet Dew is good, AFAIK... Diet code red is also decent, but by far the best tasting diet cola is Pepsi One.

nuff said.

after going to Gen Con for 20+ years, all I can say is that our hobby needs as many calorie saving options as it can get...

Have all of you so-called gamers forgotten about another yellow-tinted beverage that lends itself even better to long nights of gaming?

Mellow Yellow has nearly the same amount of prized caffiene as Mountain Dew and has a smoother and more delicious flavor. And, unlike Mountain Dew, the Yellow will not burn your throat when you drink your twelth can.

Is there that much of a lack of useful reviews out there that this one should be put into the rotation. It's bad enough that they no longer get posted to the site in a timely fashion. I didn't think it possible, but this whole site is getting worse.

For those that live near or around a Speedway gas station, they offer the ever generous 64 ounce travel "mug" aka "Coffee-Pot-To-Go". Fill this container with the drink of your choice. Most speedways have Mountian Dew on fountain. I prefer coffee. Around easter they had a great tasting Cadbury Egg flavoured coffee. I also grind my own beans for that "GM needs something special fore he opens that can of whupass".

... I wrote this review of a soda based on two things, not counting whim, I jokingly told a friend I was thinking about it and he said, "You should." Think of it as trying for a lighter moment in the slew of pompous writers trying to get rid of angst by writing gaming/fiction review, if only to keep them writing (myself is one of the guilty). And reason two, less humorously of course, is that I've had a bad rash of submitting reviews and not having them post for a while (my Orpheus and Pandoramicum reviews are some examples, as is the week long lag between submitting the two comic reviews and the two novel reviews, both posted together). Its nothing I hold against RPG.net, but I was in a "mood" to be playful, so I wrote a review using one of my two chosen formats--here, my fiction styled review allowed for more tongue-in-cheek, which I think most people posting understood it to be. (btw, I'm not a former Coca-Cola company employee, I was working for 7-Up =] .)

Besides, everyone needs to let loose sometime and be goofy. (And your kids will love and cherish you for it =] .)

Weeee!

Mountain Lightning (Wal-mart)
Mountain Mello (Associated Grocers)
Mountain Maze (Albertsons)
Alpine Mist (formerly Albertsons, now gone)
Mountain Breeze (Safeway)

There's probably some I'm forgetting here, but those are the ones I usually drink. They're about 1/2 the price of the regular Dew. Of course, I always grab the original during the good sales. :)

Alas, poor RC Draft! I knew it well! Dear, departed king of colas, brought low by a heartless corporation committed to sales, not quality. At least in my region of the US. Just like its high-powered brother, RC Edge, the RC equivalent of Jolt Cola (was still kinda weak, but it actually beat Jolt in the taste factor). I salute ya, Alex, 'cause I gotta agree with ya on that one. RC Draft WAS the best.

Another couple of 5/5 rated drinks include Stewart's Orange Cream and Stewart's Cherries and Cream sodas. And Stewart's Grape soda (AH! THREE 5/5 ratings!). And Mountain Dew Code Red (AH! FOUR 5/5 ratings!). Lot easier on your stomach than the original DEW, Dew Livewire, or any stripe of Coke when you're behind the wheel and drinking a soda.

I don't know what the hell they use as a sugar substitute in Diet Mountain Dew, but I tried it once and could never touch the stuff again! It was like drinking pure NutriSweet! Might be aspartame in it.

BTW, I read a 'Net article a few years ago that claimed that aspartame was slightly poisonous and that drinking diet sodas laced with aspartame actually retarded weight loss rather than helping it along. These claims were supported with statistics (for what THAT'S worth these days). I think the writer of the article had a saccharine-bladed axe to grind, though, so take it with a grain of salt (or sugar).
