Whenever I try to start it, I get a missing component error message.....So, I found the file online that it said was missing, but now I don't know what folder it needs to be in (i'm using XP)....Help me please.

Oddly, I don't have that exact file, but I've got variations of it. d3dx9_25.dll, and d3dx9_26.dll. Those are hiding in C:\Windows\system32, but there are a number of similarly-named files (.inf files, .pnf files, and other files with "_x86" tacked on, etc) scattered all over the place.

You might just wanna reinstall DirectX.

How?

Hmmm....I was browsing Apolytons' Civ4 Forums and apparently allot of people had similiar problems....They just released a fix....I'll download it and see if it works.

How?

I was gonna say "Just, like, install it from the game cd", but I see from the other thread that that isn't working out for you anyway. :o

It's encouraging to know that they've apparently released a patch to deal with that specific problem though; that was pretty speedy of them.

Actually, the patch turned out to be only for people who could install the DirectX version from the disc, so i'm screwed anyway

According to the tech guys on the Civ4 forums, you have to install the exact version of DirectX found on the disc, but I can't do that....Apparently, a generic version of DirectX won't work.

But, if they don't come up with a patch within the next day or so, i'll try it anyway...

Well, I replaced the file, and the game is up and running...

Everything was beutiful up until the start of the actual game....The graphics screwed up and the tiles are all blacked out, plus the civ leaders all look like floating eyeballs and dentures....Damnit.

I can see units and cities and other symbols (including the interface) just fine, but those two major problems will keep me from playing for awhile until they fix this problem.

I learned from some tech guy on the Apolyton forums that their version of DirectX9 is needed for the game because the game uses some sort of algorithms that Microsoft has'nt even released yet, therefore their special version of DirectX9 alone is necessary...

Way to go, bozos

Hey, whoa, don't do that quite yet ;)

It's allways frustrating to buy a game the day or so that it comes out....I realized that a bit too late. Should've waited for when they had a patch or something.

But I played through the entire tutorial, and besides the blackmap and cheshire-civ-leader annoyances, I could tell it was gonna be a good game.

Youy have to install their DirectX version or else the game won't work? Smells like bullshit to me. Rather, I think your install of DirectX is screwed. Run DXDIAG (go to Start/Run and type in 'DXDIAG') and take a look at what the program says under the tab 'DirectX files'.

Everything looks fine, "No problems found"...

Go to the Microsoft link above, and then click on the link for the runtime version. The runtime version is the only version that developers are allowed to use, and it should be the same version that's on the CD. If it's not, then Firaxis screwed the pooch bigtime in a way that no developer before them has.

I tried to, but neither their first nor second validation thingies worked for me....Fucking validation bullshit...

Sometimes you can get weird DirectX initialization errors when your video card isn't up to snuff. Are you sure your card is supported?

Yeah, DirectX has been working for me for many years, its' just their most recent versions that seem to be screwing me up....And by validation, I meant the DX download site....They make you have to "validate" your copy of Windows by downloading some thingy, but the first one did'nt work, and the second one I had to open some download from its' source and run it, but all I got was a blank screen.

The hell....I never had to deal with this validation crap from them before.
