You can have your cake and eat it, too.

1. If the situation calls for dice, have the player roll the dice.
2. Tell the player what the result of the encounter will be.
3. Have the player role-play the encounter accordingly.

It's fun to role-play a botched seduction attempt! The player can ham it up and be creative with how he or she botches.

GM: "He's not a Conan-esque warrior. More of a quiet, brooding rogue with dark eyes."

Jane: "Erwina's type of guy, for sure. A weakness, yeah. I want to hit on him and see if he knows anything about the Goats of War."

GM: "Roll Seduction at difficulty 18. He's initially pretty hostile towards you, probably figuring you for a typical bar room girl, and not a first-rate enchantress."

Jane: *dice clatter* She rolls a 3. "Crap. Even with my 11 Seduction, it's not enough."

GM: Chuckling. "Well, he won't be impressed and will continue to dislike you... at least for now."

Jane: (Role-playing Erwina) "I bat my eyelashes at him and give him a coy smile, sitting on his lap. 'Hello there. What's a guy like you doing in a nice place like this...?'"

GM: (Role-playing the rogue) "He lets his knees separate and you're summarily deposited on the floor with a thump. 'Don't touch me,' he says angrily, quickly checking his belt pouch to make sure it's not lighter. 'Who sent you?!'"

I do it the other way. Roleplay it, and then roll to see whether what you just did worked. What you just did can suck, but you can still succeed if your character would have done better. This is unrealistic, yeah, but it doesn't break the mood at all. The player can ignore the rolling, since the GM's play of the NPCs will follow it.
