Since you asked, I've dragged out my 1st ed. DMG. So...

Dang! Has the type always been this little bitty? It didn't usta be so hard to read. Where's my strongest reading glasses? (kaf wheeze damn kids {tm})

Page 29:

"If henchmen are defined as the associates, companions, and loyal (to some degree) followers of a player character, hirelings are the servitors, mercnaries, and employees of such player characters,"

In other words, ordinary folks are hirelings, anybody who can gain levels is a henchman.

Or so it was in 1st Ed. Your edition's mileage may vary.

Thanks, Geezer!

Believe it or not, my original draft used "Henchmen." I vaguely recalled "Hirelings" (my copy of the 1st ed DM's Guide is buried in my parent's crawlspace, and I don't live there any more).

Looks like I should've used "Henchmen/Hirelings," since the article really applies to both.

Since we're going old school, my next article will be about the proper use of Comeliness, lol.

I'm glad you don't live in your parent's crawlspace any more.

(When dangling, I will yank your participles.)
