While I agree that gaming as you get older is harder, I think there's a limit beyond which accounting for that just makes it not worth it; for example, if it became clear that I couldn't fit in more than two hours of gaming in a session, I'd just forget about it. Similarly, if my players were so busy they couldn't show up pretty regularly, I don't think it's worth my time to even try.

Think of roleplaying as a medium ;) or rather a pretext to spend some time, have a few beers and socialize with your old buddies. This is based on the assumption you are not wasting your time with them.

Concerning short sessions, and provided you are not the older, married sort with little free time, I have noticed it may be easier to play short sessions, say, on every Tuesday (from 9 or 10 pm to 1 am) rather than expecting every player to be available in the week-end, and 100% efficient after 2am.
Plus, it allows you to go out in the week-end, see the sun, celebrate weddings and birthdays and run after girls.

I agree with Grop!

But, then, I would. I game with my friends because they're my friends. We get together every Saturday night from 7 til around midnight (sometimes 2 or 3 AM) because we like hanging out with each other. If we don't happen to play the game every week we're OK with it.

Like the article says: Relax. :)

When we were all younger and none of us had kids we were much more hardcore about the gaming but that's because we saw each other more during the week. Now, Saturdays are pretty much the only time we get together except for the three or four cons we attend a year. Speaking of cons, that's when we revert to the schedules of our youth. We pull some marathon sessions during those weekends.

But that's the point; gaming _isn't_ just an excuse to spend time with my friends. It's a thing unto itself, and the short session games simply aren't worthwhile to me.
