Converted from Phorums BB System

QUOTE "Nevertheless, there are two games -- Skyrealms of Jorune and the French game Malefices -- that have a single psychological trait that only models intellectual abilities. "

In fact, that's quite common in French games, which usually have few attributes : ex. Bloodlust, EW-System, Hurlements, Simulacres, Chimeres, R.A.S, among others... Minimalism is quite the fad among French-made rpgs.

I don't own that much French games actually, but I suppose that you are right French designers got the idea of lite games a long time ango without turning it into a fad or a clan thing. I recall the R.O.L.E. game in the magazine Casus Belli, for instance, as an example of a early lite game.

The main French rpg magazine, CASUS BELLI, actively promoted light-system rules, explaining their popularity in France. Most French-made RPGs use such systems, except the Asmodée Productions games, tending toward rules complexity.

It spawned its own rules-light system, SimulacreS ("Simulacrum"), with limited success.

However, D&D and variations on the Chaosium system remain the most popular in France to this day. :)

On the other hand Légendes, Méga 3 and Rêves de Dragon can hardly be described as "rules lite". And the latter was very succesful.

And the latter is also in English (http://malcontent.sourdust.com).

Indeed, among French RPGs there are light and heavy systems. Both are much present, and it would be a mistake to assume only one sort exists.
