I can agree many games fall short of the mark; sexuality is usually a pointy finger affair. When it?s obviously an important part of any functioning society, weather it?s Fantasy or Sci-Fi. From what I personally have seen most have been an excuse to see some pictures of naked women.
I offer up an alternative a project I?m working on which deals directly with the issue of Sexuality. The Wraeththu RPG, is based around a single sex race, this race have been spawned from humanity. So one of the biggest things they have to deal with their change in sexual preference and changes in gender. I?m working with many people who have had real gender issues and other who have studied the phenomena. So we have covered many things from relations ships to androgynous pro-nouns, and many topics that would crop up in a single sex society. Not to mention a bloody good setting with lots of intrigue and turmoil.
One thing that strikes me is the response I received when we announced the project. I can only say it?s been tantamount to hate mail, and direct personal attacks in places. Many of these from role-players who would rather buy ?The book of Erotic Fantasy,? which is not really that serious, rather than consider the nature and seriousness we are dealing with these issues in our project. In our game Sex does not play a major part (no more than it would in real life), Sexuality is an important issue, though not overriding. As you play character that once were male, and have now been mutated in to hermaphrodites. This gives rise to plenty of opportunities for good sold role-playing as thy character come to grips with their new form and gender.
As gender issues are not everyone?s up of tea, these can be downplayed should the group wish to and they can explore the setting just like every other game on the market.
