Hmm, interesting take. I'm pretty sure that most of the characters I've ever played have been intended to be me on some level - usually even more naive and craven though. :-) It reminds me of some comments that Richard Bartle (he of MUD-originating fame) made about the 'British' and 'American' schools of role-playing, in the context of classes and classlessness in MUDs - the latter being about playing someone thoroughly different and alien to yourself, and the former being about playing characters who exemplified facets of your own personality. (I put the quote marks in 'cos I'm not necessarily convinced it's a transatlantic thing ... then again, Dr Bartle has been playing RPGs for longer than I've been alive ... )
I've also heard it referred to as the DeNiro / Brando axis, for some reason...
Thoughts?

P.S. Not sure if I can find the original article where this is mentioned, but this one's a bit similar... http://www.mud.co.uk/richard/edge3.htm .
