I am doing this constantly in my games to keep them fresh and interesting.

I wanted to run an Exalted game, but my players were much more familiar and in love with the World of Darkness. We started a Hunter:Reckoning game, with the Hunters confined to an asylum. Through flashbacks and hallucinations and dreams, I was able to put them in the Exalted setting which mirrored/paralleled the events and characters in the world of darkness... In the WoD they were trapped in an asylum, constantly drugged and paranoid of whom they can trust and trying to escape... in the Exalted world they were super-heroes wielding a keg of whoop-ass... I wanted to contrast the bleak hopelessness of the WoD with the hope and possibilities of Exalted (anyone read The Maxx)? It was very successful to the point that the players looked forward to slipping into the "dreamworld" of Exalted, not to escape the WoD, but to find more pieces to the puzzle.

I had only one regular player so this worked very well and led to some very intense roleplaying. It did not last very long because we both had incompatible work schedules.

I remember reading in another forum (maybe even here in rpg.net) about one group that interrupted their cyberpunk game for a a one-shot dungeon crawl... about halfway through the crawl it was revealed to them that their characters were plugged into a game simulator, and that they had to find a way out of the game to return to their bodies. Brilliant!
