When you have tables, you simply CAN'T generate revenue by designating them RPGs. The RPG product line model is few units of more expensive content (splatbooks, worldbooks), while CCGs and Miniatures are high volume, low unit cost models. You can sell a lot of sealed decks, or MechWarrior boxes prior to a CCG/Miniature Game. What can you sell prior to an RPG tourney? Not much, and whatever it is, it doesn't have that "collectable" fever attached to it.

RPGs are destined to be relegated to the fringe of the fringe.

Oh well.

To capture the money of RPG'ers you should look into selling food, coffee, drinks, pencils and copier usage... Plus, with d20 3.5 and the miniature line coming out, you might see players buying them also. Time will tell. But I can not tell you how many times I have seen a gameshop full of RPG'ers have to leave to get junk food---each person spending around 10.00 each... Now, if the store had a microwave and sold frozen pizza's (SAM's sells them in packs...) and similar items they just might get 10 or more dollars from the gamers.. So, a table of 6 gamers playing for 6 hours each person spending around 10.00's will get you a nice return on your space...

Surely if you're selling food you're then responsible for hygeine and safety issues, though?

I don't know how things work in your neck of the woods, but where I live you need a permit to sell anything more complicated than pop, chips and candy bars.

Then sell pop, chips, and candy bars and leave it at that. It's definitely better than nothing. Maybe work your way up to a permitted vendor later on if food profits are good enough to warrant it.

My FLGS (owned and run by one of my best friends boyfriends and his father) is planning on doing this when they move to their new location. They are also planning on selling small costume pieces that his sister makes. I think (not sure) that they plan on going almost a full "concession stand" route, with something equivalent to real food. We'll see how it works.
