The directors of The Matrix didn't coin "The Desert of the Real", they took it from French poststructural theorist Jean Baudrillard, best known to Matrix viewers as author of "Simulacra and Simulation".

Zizek makes use of the term, but Baudrillard coined it first, in 1983, in his "Ecstasy of Communication" essay. But all of those PoMo theorists use each other's terms in slapdash fashion.
