Converted from Phorums BB System
...and have spent the weekend reading all the installments. So, I guess I can't deny that you have something compelling going on here!
I would like to throw my chips in with the "go, improv" camp. I've been gaming for about 10 years now (starting in the 8th grade) and I've played in about a dozen groups. I've come a long way in GMing, and I've also seen some really botched and some really amazing attempts by others.
A tip I would give to GMs is to always keep in contact with another person you know who GMs who *doesn't* play in your game. The value in having another GM-mind to bounce things off of is invaluable. This was much rarer in the past, but now with channels such as these RPG.net columns (and forums) it's easier than ever. Use the free resources!
I'm beginning a Shadowrun 4th Edition game in the next week or so, thus this column has been very useful in helping me prepare. Speaking of which, no one has brought this up yet, but there is an old (defunct) column called Blackjack's Corner (http://archive.dumpshock.com/bjcorner/index.php3) that would probably be of interest to those who read (and write!) this one. The writing style is entertaining, and although his style is a little on the heavy-handed style (Evil GM, if you will), a lot of the concepts apply to pretty much any (modern) RPG. There's over 50 entries at that site, any of which I'd probably recommend.
Keep up the good work, can't wait to see the next column!
