Having been to Germany, France, England, Italy, Greece, and Turkey to name a few and (being the history buff) visited numerous medieval castles and ruins thereof, I have to say that it really does help my suspension of belief to see some elements of Medieval culture and architecture in games. Then again, I'm also the kind of person who likes realism in setting. Even if the characters are running at full speed with no penalty through underbrush that would take a flamethrower to clear, I can write that off as cinematic if the setting is done well. For example, ever notice that nearly every road leading to a castle has the castle on its right hand side? It's because your right hand is your weapon hand, not your shield hand, so if you move up the road against the castle, you'll be exposed to arrow fire. Even if there's no game effect, the setting effect helps my mind think its more... real.

Exactly my opinion. I don't care if there are rules effects that start (over?) complicating things, but those real details that help you get immersed in a setting a bit better.

Too true. Harnmaster is my system of choice and in that system you really have to be careful how much load you place your character under, lest your skills of all kinds just drop away due to encumberance.
