I had no idea that written Chinese would be so easily readable over such a long period of time. Jeez, just trying to decipher what the heck Shakespeare had to say some of the time is enough of a pain, and that wasn't all that long ago :)

As I understand it the difficulty comes in with some of the metaphors. Ancient Chinese is riddled with the equivalent of Simpsons references.

So reading "Three Pieces of Jade Arise" is easy; it's knowing that the first emperor sat in a tent with Xiang Bo and raised his jade bracelet three times while planning a devastating assault that failed because his third courtesan's child betrayed one of the army's lieutenants over a woman that's hard.
