I also was on the "RPGs are an expensive hobby" camp, but after reading this article, I changed my mind:

(WARNING: Critical Miss isn't a politically correct site, so consider yourself warned. It's also one of the funniest RPG ezines I've ever read :)

If you think about it, what's expensive in roleplaying is your initial investment. Shure, those corebooks cost a lot, but after buying then, each one of them offers an almost infinite number of potential hours of fun. Compared to movies, music or even videogames, RPGs have a pretty good hours of enjoyment/fun ratio.

"Gaming isn't art"

Well, as much as I hate to agree with Juhana, it CAN be art. It doesn't have to, and a gamer trying to create art via roleplaying isn't superior to one just trying to have a good time, but there are some products out there that clearly have taken roleplaying beyond the "hobby" label (Nobilis 2nd ed. comes to mind).
