Not to nitpick, but isn't the proposed setting quite like the Dragonlance setting?
I mean, for original world creation, since Tolkien-style worlds are overused, shouldn't you try to build something truly original, like Darksun or Planescape were, rather than a variation on a known theme?

I haven't had much contact with the Dragonlance setting myself (I've only listened to a couple of abridged audio cassettes). The only similarity I've been able to draw from that is the fact that both worlds have a higher than normal concentration of dragons. For example, in our setting the dragons are overtly in charge. As I recall, in Dragonlance the humans/demi-humans were still mostly in charge.
Of course, I could be completely off on this (It's been a couple of years). Could you post some specific similarities that you've seen?

We batted some unusual ideas around (I think some of them were mentioned in column one), but ultimately fantasy was the common denominator when everybody's interests were polled. Blame Peter Jackson, I guess.

Ace is right. The only things Dragonlance and this world have in common is that both worlds use D&D rules and both have dragons.
I actually don't see a lot of similarities with Middle Earth either, except the standard ones that exist in D&D itself. As Ace said, some examples from you would help us answer your questions better.

I believe the original poster is referring to the Fifth Age setting, where dragons are the dominant political power and have reshaped the world to there whims. Not great parallels, but the similarity can be seen.

In that case wouldn't it be more similar to Council of Wyrms?

Yes, in as much as any setting with Dragons as Overlords is superficially the same. But then again, CoW didn't have dragons with World-Shaping powers, or Draconic powerbases outside of the Io's Blood Island Chain, as opposed to the various (often feuding) Dragon Realms of Fifth Age and the floating cities of Dragonsuns
One dissimilarity that I think invalidates any comparison of the two is the treatment of Metallic Dragons in Dragonsuns as real contenders for political power. In FA only one Metallic - a Brass - rose to a position of power, given that they would not seek lordship over the mortal races of Krynn. DrS takes a more likely (in my view) approach in that Metallics have domains, but have a benevolent agenda. Or at least, seemingly benevolent.

Loupdunoir makes some good points. I had no intention of trying to recreate Dragonlance when I started this column. And I don't know how this world will turn out in the end, which is one of the great joys of world building using the input of other gamers.

I recommend Castles and Crusades. Fast paced and lots of action. Next column I'm going to include ideas on how Dragonsuns would work with C&C.
