I like what you have said about dwarves and elves in this column. I just want to make one obvious point about fantasy races in campaigns, namely that it is not absolutely necessary to use every race appearing in the PHB. I'm not altogether convinced that you need gnomes, halflings, and so on; having too many non-human cultures could even take the focus away from the dragons, and that is probably the last thing you want to do.

Just my opinion there; I'm personally not too fond of fantasy worlds with too many races at once (with the exception of planar travel campaigns such as Planescape, but that's a completely different topic).

Thanks for your input. So far, none of my fellow world builders have been willing to tinker with the rules as presented in the core rulebooks. I'll have to get some more feedback from them before I leave anything out of Dragonsuns that appears in the Player's Handbook.

We can, of course, simply concentrate on dragons, elves, and dwarves and leave gnomes and halflings up to the DM.

Mostly we balked at the concept of replacing the cleric (one of the "holy quartet") with the Favored Soul (who simply can't do the cleric's job as well as a cleric can). The reason given was that it requires virtually every CR in the book to be tweaked...

I don't think there will be any such problems with removing gnomes or halflings (unless someone out there really likes gnomes or halflings).

Ace is correct. Also, I don't think Ace objected at all to using the dracha since his idea inspired me to bring that race in! I should have been more precise and clear instead of making such a broad statement.
