My thought was to make Basic D&D all a DM or player really needs to play. If you don't want lots of rules, stick with Basic D&D (and maybe Advanced).

All the other books would build onto that Basic system. A lot of books means two things for consumers. One, D&D Inc. would stay in business so D&D could continue. And two, 5th edition would be a long ways off if all those books were on the horizon.

I think the more books on various and interesting subjects the better. A DM would only need the Basics to play, however.
