Or at least the beta has been deployed in two games: Mutants & Masterminds and especially Blue Rose.

Check them out as it might make this article seem redundant.

IMHO, Castles and Crusades is a step back to something like 2.5 edition, since it so clearly harkens back to that era (including proofreading issues).

Gaming Nut,

You are aware that Green Ronin doesn't actually own D&D right? They created those games using the OGL.

Gaming Nut's point is, I believe, that many of the mechanics you suggested in your column are already available in other OGL games. While I've not seen Blue Rose, Mutants & Masterminds is at least worth a look in that respect. Granted, these are not "D&D", but they are D20/OGL, and it seems fair of him to suggest that you check them out to see if those rulesets have what you seek already. If they don't, it might be good to explain how your mechanics are substantially different.

Am I being redundant? Heck no.

You sir are.

In your column and in the post you have that belittles my reply to your very extremely ignorant column. Other people have already begun the process you are talking about, so all you end up doing in your pretentious column is sound like a 21st century game fan who is about to release their homebrew game as a Heartbreaker.

The work is being done. Check it out. Borrow and steal from it. Grow from it.

Game Nut,

I'm going to repress my desire to respond with insults as you have done and try one time to be as civil as I can even though I'm really pissed.

My advice to you is list what you like about Mutants and Masterminds and Blue Rose and Conan and whatever other OGL games you like. Explain what is better in those games and how you'd use it in 4th edition. Helpful criticism with possible remedies are more helpful than belligerent comments and no solutions.

If you simply don't like my column:
A. Don't read it.
B. Write your own. Rpg.net could use more columns. I'll check the posts there to see how you react when a reader says your column (which you'll write for free) might be redundant, is ignorant, and is pretentious without that reader ever offering useful criticism. I hope you enjoy those kind of helpful posts as much as I do.

Charlie

DaveN,

I appreciate you offering clarification for me in a friendly way and trying to smooth the waters between Game Nut and myself. I actually did understand Game Nut's point. However, you stated the same point in a polite way (thanks) and he did not. In fact, Game Nut never even asked me if I had ever checked out those OGL games.

I actually have already checked out Blue Rose and Mutants and Masterminds. Both games have great mechanics and good ideas. I've also looked at Arcana Unearthed, Iron Lore (the little we know about it), Iron Kingdoms, and the Black Company. I need to check out Conan next. I've read designers notes, playtest examples, and skimmed many of the rules.

I reacted to Game Nut the way I did because he indicated that my column might be redundant but did not offer any concrete or solid rules/mechanics that he'd like to see in 4th edition. I put some effort into writing the column and he took no effort to offer an honest critique, he simply belittled my efforts and assumed I'm ignorant when in fact I'm not (about D&D and OGL anyway).

If Game Nut disagrees with me politely I'm all for that. I simply want to hear useful feedback: what specifically does he like about those OGL games and how would he put them to work in 4th edition.

Otherwise, simply posting to bash my column really doesn't do anything but irritate me and waste other readers' time.

Charlie
