I don't think what you're describing is the D&D most people like. I think people like choosing races (that'd be a big one) rolling stats (despite point systems being available, most people still roll), having lots of classes to choose from, etc.. You may have a good game design but not D&D. When they sat down to streamline the game for 3e there's certain things they wouldn't touch. Guys like Jonathan Tweet were probably aware of how much more they could have done, but there's a reason it stopped where it did.
