As far as available data indicates seems Warlord (the D&D-esque CCG by AEG) went officialy on sale 4/2/01.

This means it is already 5 years old!

You probably couldn't care less, but i simply can't believe it has already been so long since i got the first demo decks (before the game's release) in my hands and one thing lead to another to the degree me & my gaming buddies applied for playtesters.

Many many nice moments are associated with the game and the fact that it has managed to survive this long & have 17 sets says something about one of the best CCG communities around.

Good for it. :)

Wow I had no idea the game was out that long. Congrats to them.

I played in a demo of it, I think it was at Origins last year, and it was fun, but I just can't afford to get into another CCG. That, and no one around here carries it anyway. Well one store does, but there aren't any players in the area that I know of.

Congrats to them again.

I always enjoyed Warlord. I stopped playing after a few months unfortunately; my great regret was that no one else I knew played it. But I always liked it and to this day I still feel a pang of regret at selling my cards (I had some good stuff too, Chain Lightnings, pre-errata Prince Alarics). I even remember the smell of the cards - very pungent (in a good way!). Were it possible, I'd happily play it again. Nice, tight simple rules that worked - even with the dice (not normally something I approve of in ccg design).

Memories, memories...

And to add salt to the wound (:p ) now is a good time to actually get back in. :)

The new edition & basic set (Epic Edition) will be coming out soon, Eye of the Storm, the lattest expansion, is about to come out (you can see the basic preview countdown in www.warlordccg.com), and both it & the previous ones are already legal for the Epic. Plus, Battle Box II, the lattest intro kit of premade decks (an Elf & a Dwarf one, featuring all new Warlords) is a sweet deal.

Anyway, yeah, even i didn't realize it has been 5 years already. To be honest, i didn't expect the game to survive this long (after 7th Sea &, especially, Doomtown not making it), but, like i said, it is supported by one of the best fan bases around, making it one of the few CCGs (you can count them in 1 hand) to have a reduction in sales (it is usually a downward spiral that can last for even 1+ year till the game's death) and then manage to go strong again, even stronger than before (the case with Warlord's 2nd edition, Camapaign).

Isn't this piece (http://www.warlordccg.com/images/dwarven6pack.jpg), from the upcoming new edition of Warlord, really nice? :)

It even is a Starting Line-up of Characters. The dude with the huge hammer riding the Gargoyle, for instance, is the Warlord :

Well if I could find players and cards then great. I'm about ready to ditch the increasingly bloated VS in favour of something else anyway. Unfortunately so many good ccg's come and go here because no one else plays them (LBS was another as was L5R which enjoyed a brief outing).

Well, for the really desperate types there is always the option of on-line play through Apprentice (downloading the Warlord patch sets for it)...

More cool artwork-on-the-making from Warlord's upcoming new basic set:

http://www.warlordccg.com/images/6pack_db.jpg

These are some of the Mercs.

The guy in the huge suit of armour in the top, is Ablung the Maker & well... he is the suit of armour. There isn't anything inside. He was (used to be) the setting's most brilliant artificer & to live forever he transfered his spirit in the armour, which some time (i.e. sets) ago was found in a ruined city.

Ablung The Maker
Level 2 - Classless - Evil
ATK: +1 /+1 AC: 11 Skill: +5 Hit Points: 2
Mercenary * Warlord * Siege
Ablung is a cleric, a fighter, a rogue, and a wizard.
Order: Once per turn: Permanently gain one of the following: +4 ATK, +4 AC, +6 Skill, +1 HP, +1 level, or any feat with a +1 bonus.

He is the ultimate in Warlords to uber with.

I had over 7000 cards from the first 4 sets of Warlord, and I demo'd it for AEG. Even won some tournements in Atlanta. Loved the game.

Moved twice since and never found anyone else who plays it.

I just dumped those 7k cards in the trash about two weeks ago.

now it appears that in OKC, there is a warlord following, and since I don't do MTG, I am sorta wondering if my trashing the old stuff was a good idea.

I played up until they reformatted (or whatever made the original sets defunct). I wasn't to thrilled about the local tourney scene anyway, so I don't think it was the game that drove me away.

It's not a bad game, but like all multiplayer games it's easier to find players first and then pick a game then to pick a game and convince players to play it.

The editon change, from the original to Campaign Edition (the move now is from Campaign Edition to Epic Edition, the difference this time is that 2, instead of 1, of the sets before the actual new basic set are already legal for the new format).

Well, yeah, that is pretty much true for all CCGs (and i'd even sa games in general).

But... ehhm... Warlord is not a multiplayer CCG. Up until recently (a year or so ago) there even weren't official multiplayer (2 vs. 2 actually) rules by AEG (the approved ones pretty much ended up being the ones that had been used for quite some time in the big tourneys, i.e. more or less agreed by the player community itself).

The game does play nice enough, & sure is fun, in team play, but at the same time is kinda funky at it (wasn't & isn't really designed for it, but for 1 vs. 1 play, that is our concern during playtest, with the occasional nod towards multiplayer) & doesn't really rank against the good multiplayer games (even if they are good in singles, too), like V:tES or Doomtown.

I was just refering to the game as being multiplayer. multi meaning multiple. The game has more than 1 player (unlike some video games and wargames).

I was pointing out that if you plan to play a CCG, boardgame, RPG, or any other game that requires other humans it's better to find the other participants first than to pick a game and then try and convince people to play with you.

That was bloody kewl!!

I just opened a tab to the Warlord CCG mainpage (http://www.warlordccg.com) & the kid sitted right next to in the 'Net cafe caught a glimpse of it, to the exclamation of "Warlord! I used to have some cards from it!". To which i provided some info, like how i am a playtester for the game ( ), how a new basic set is coming out soon, and a little more general chit-chat.

This made me feel all fuzzy inside. :) :)

EDIT:

And we keep chatting between him playing Counter Strike. About Warlord, other CCGs, how fast i type, etc.

He & his friend are sure looking a lot towards what i'm perusing on my browser. They even went me go to www.buffyworld.com (to find a quote from Angel) to the response of "Angel!! I never missed an episode of that series!" (of the 1st Season that airs at weird hours around here, that is).

Most of those 7000 cards won't be legal anymore. Also, as Yo! notes, Epic Edition is just right around the corner.

Me, I met some people who are playing with dirt cheap cards from mostly non tournament legal sets. I just dug out my cheesy Prince Alaric deck and Black Tom/Yedraw's Tooth deck out of cold storage.

Good times.

He is not the first Character to be shown smoking. It seems tabacco & cigarettes of some kind / cigars do exist in the Accordlands.

In fact, the other Character is also a Free Kingdoms one:

And for anyone interested, in the RPG's site (http://www.warlordrpg.com/) the stats of one Warlord will get released each week.

I think that we'll be seeing stats for the Warlord who will get reprinted in the new basic set, Epic Edition, along with their new artwork (or at least if they do not have one for the RPG, since Adonis the Cozener is a very recent addition to the CCG to have managed to make it in the RPG, while Tresspass is explicitely mentioned to be in the books), since they both are in the list of re-prints (to cross-promote between the 2, i guess). :)

And:

"Alderac Entertainment is pleased to announce that it is partnering with Magnificent Egos to produce official miniatures based on its popular Warlord: Saga of the Storm collectible card game and Warlords of the Accordlands role playing game lines.

Magnificent Egos plans an initial release of six miniatures for August 2006, at the Gen Con Game Fair in Indianapolis. One figure will be

released representing each faction. The new figures will be brought to life by sculptors Gael Goumon and Tom More among others based on designs by notable fantasy artists including Michael Komarck, Matthew Armstong, William O’Connor, Carl Frank and Jason Engle.

"Magnificent Egos has shown great quality and attention to detail in their miniatures releases. We are excited to have Magnificent Egos bring the Warlords of the Accordlands RPG game to the miniatures world," said Warlord: Saga of the Storm Brand Manager, Todd Rowland.

"Magnificent Egos is very excited to be partnering with AEG," said company President Chris Clark. "The potential synergy between our products is tremendous and the ground-breaking creative work from both companies gives us an amazing array of possibilities."

Warlord: Saga of the Storm CCG was first released over five years ago. A gaming favorite, it brings elements of role-playing games to the CCG world. Warlord will release Epic Edition, its third base set in the summer of 2006. The Warlord line grew again earlier this year with the release of the Warlords of the Accordlands RPG, which brings the rich world of the Warlord CCG to life in a d20 RPG world.

Magnificent Egos is a Texas-based corporation with a growing line of pewter and resin fantasy figures dedicated to unique characters and creatures. The Warlord line joins their broad offering of miniatures including the Legend of the Five Rings line (also licensed from AEG) and the Origins Award nominated Uncommon Characters. For more information on Magnificent Egos or to find out where to buy their products, visit or e-mail James Stubbs at nigerianoilminister@magnificentegos.com.

Alderac Entertainment Group, Inc., is based in Ontario, California. Formed in 1993, Alderac’s first product was the hobby gaming magazine, Shadis. It jumped into the collectible card game business in August 1995 with the release of Legend of the Five Rings which remains one of the most popular CCG’s to date. Alderac continued on to produce other collectible card and role-playing games such as Warlord CCG and City of Heroes CCG, and has become an industry leader in hobby gaming. Indeed he is! :D

If you ask me, each & everyone of the 6 of the new Warlords released with Epic Edition itself are very good ones (all of them. Really. ). And this was not a random thing. ;)

Plus, it was easy to guess what they would be about by taking a look at the returning Warlords & the gaps that were left by them. So, the Nothrog only had Brikta, from the Champions promo set, as a Fighter Warlord, meaning that they did need another one, and Sagrok can fill both the spot of the front-ranker & the support Fighter Warlord.

More so, the Northrog did need something that goes completely *Hulk Smash!*, in the vain of Krun or Ar'tek, none of which returned for Epic Edition. There is a certain demographic of players who is really into them & they are very eye-catching for new players.

So, everyone's happy. :)

More big news about the game:

Read the lattest Desigm Journal (http://www.warlordccg.com/diaries/whats_dungeon_is_dungeon.html). What does it talk about? Nothing less than a completely new card type: Dungeons! Oh, yeah, finally both of D&D's Ds are represented in the game. :D And this is the first time a new card type is added in the game since its inception (certain kind of Action cards are pointing that way, but they were still good old Action cards, despite any funky mechanics).

So, lets see the first one previewed:

http://www.warlordccg.com/diaries/images/the_shattered_spire.jpg

Spiffy. The anti-'Temple of Lore' (an old card but very important when it came out & for Open, plus more fun since the new set, the one it comes from is called 'Temple of Lore'). And it can be seen that the new Dungeons kinda work like M:tG's 'Enchant World' cards.

Any thoughts on the new cards, especially the Warlords? Notice that there are 2 per Faction this time, a first (well, Call 2 Arms had 2 Warlords, too, but it was a double-sized expansion).

There is also a pimp-hat among the Items. :D Also all the artwork is intra-connected, like the Action cards all showing Characters from this set only. :

And now for news none but me cares about! :D :

The latest kewl thing is happening in Warlord right now: voting! The next direct-buy set, Stolen Destinies, is going to feature new versions of 42 already existing Characters (7 for each of the 6 Factions & one for each even getting to the lofty position of a new Warlord).

Who this bunch of Characters will be is getting decided right now by player vote, in the relevant site (http://www.warlordccg.com/stolendestinies.html). 42 Characters are presented each week, from one of the Factions (Mercenaries was done last week, now its the Nothrog), for each player to choose from.

This has been spiffy, even with voting campaigns in the forums (http://www.temple-of-lore.com/forums/index.php). :D

Oh, where i was getting it at:

Back in the day there was a set for Warlord, Call to Arms, all made up my submitions of cards made my players. I had a dozen or so of mine make it through (the person with the 2nd most, baby  ) & it's nice to see the Characters among them make their appearance in the characters-to-vote lists so far. :D

Guess what i have been voting. ;) I don't really believe either the Merc (Snakewyrm (http://www.lot.f2o.org/wsearch.php)) or the Nothrog (Nareduk (http://www.lot.f2o.org/wsearch.php)) will get enough votes, but i'm more positive for the ones of the remaining Factions (hadn't realized a Character of mine for all Factions had make in in Call to Arms, heh :) ).
