View Full Version : [Oblivion, Necro] My one disappointment vs. Morrowind
Something Else

Overall, Oblivion is better than Morrowind. Gameplay is more fun and there's more plot. Things hold together better, and NPCs don't stand in one place forever.
On the other hand, there's less factions to join. I loved being able to join the Guard and the Cult in Morrowind, not to mention all the houses. In Oblivion, you can't do that...

yeah they tweaked it a lot :(
no levitate
no invisibility until i'm much higher level illusionist (i think)
so many fewer items to wear so you can't stack enchantments like in morrowind (my STR was 300 = carrying weight of 1500)
BUT no cliff racers no auto block :)
the whole thing seems much simpler but it frees you up to play it more vigourously hehe
all in all a thumbs up from me

Thank God! I thought I was the only one. Morrowind had what...10, 11 factions you could join? I was looking forward to playing a crusading priest battling demonic hordes. Hopefully by the time I'm able to pick it up on the PC there will be a mod that adds in the Guard and Cult.
It really makes me rethink those people who claimed they dumbed down the game for a wider audience.

Morrowind... lets see...
Imperial Cult
Tribunal Temple
Fighter's Guild
Mage's Guild
Thieves' Guild
Morag Tong
Imperial Legions
House Hlaalu
House Redoran
House Telvani..............only join one of these three
Blades
Ashlanders.(not really factions)
I think that's it.

Sorry, I wasn't clear. I was referring to wanting to be a crusading priest battling demonic hordes. 'Cause that sounds cool, to me.
I belong to the Blades and Imperial Cult. I registered myself as a Cult Sergeant, but the mission they want me do is ridiculous -- walk around (yay! more walking!) talking to high elves in the hopes that I can find some random elf who walked out with a sacred bowl. Yeah. Right.
Now, if only I could my way out of fucking Vivec... :D

What the game lacks in factions is made up for in depth. Each faction line is really in depth and the rewards at the end of the quests make you truly feel important as opposed to just giving you a different higher rank.
When you become a Guildmaster or and Archmage you actually feel like one because you are given some control over the operation of the guild (For instance in the Fighters Guild you can choose to concentrate on completing contract or recruiting more fighters and depending on your choices you make money each month.

In Oblivion I have played through all the factions bar the Fighters guild and I can honestly say that the only one I realy enjoyed was the Darkbrotherhood. The rest are abit bland and generic.
DB string was awesome though. It is the single quest string in the game that has made me actualy give a crap about whats going on.

The bowl quest is pretty easy, if that helps. If you ask around, you'll get pointed to where Caryarel is, and there you'll find his stuff. :)

Hmm, I on the other hand have only done the Fighters Guild with a little bit from all the others. What I have found is that all the quests no matter how generic they might seem will usually have a twist to them.
A great example is the first Fighters Guild quest you get in Anvil. It is a nice spoof on the first quest you get in the Fighters Guild in Morrowind.

I do agree more factions would have been fun...
It would also be nice if there were some limitations to joining simply because it does not seem right to end up Master of all the Guilds at once...
Even if they did't impose a arbitory restriction (you already joined the Fighter Guild so you can't join the Mage's Guild) they could have forced choices on you for the higher level missions where completing it successfully might have precluded advancement in a different Guild or something like that...
I guess I don;t like the way you can do everything with the one character...

yeah that was a nice one - don't just run in and hack her "pets" to death lol I laughed for a while, well, for a second or two, but it was fun.
morrowind also had royal quests in tribunal (not quite a guild) and all the new imperial legion ones in bloodmoon. and some cool subquests like rebuilding that daedric shrine to boethiath. oh and you can do all the house quests if u want cos you can be chief and get thrown out and then join another one. i completed redoran and now am halfway up hlaalu. obviously i won't be able to complete em as i can't get a stronghold thrice, unless i nick that construction contract back from whatsisface... hmmm.
the main bummer with it is that you move so slowly at the start of the game and you don't feel you want to pay for transport. me i'm level 60 now and chief of 5 guilds, redoran, archmage, imperial legion knight errant, temple high priest (or whatever), imperial cult primate, nerevarine in the blades, and i'm at the last stage of the morag tong (but i lost one of the 32 stupid sanguine rings grrr), last stage of the thiefs guild (can't be arsed with the gloves yet), last stage of fighters (don't want to hurt anyone dear to me) and the ashlanders can rot in their stinking yurts...
so it is a shame theyre not all in oblivion, BUT i agree that the gameplay and feel is much improved, especially with the cool oblivion modpack. i hated the game before that (lost my horse, 5 items to a page in the inventory in 1280x1024, no saddlebags, psychic enemies when you sneak attack em, teeny map, night and dungeons too bright, no safe storage, etc etc.) that modpack sorted it all right out - made me feel that the game basics were all finally in place.
roll on the expansion pack...

but..
:( i wasted $50 on some crap game that sux, like seriously the kajits walk like they have a pole shuved up their ass. also the combat sux,( you swing 50 times and hit twice). all the spells look the same. the only thing i did like was the range of weapons and armours, but the game is a waste of money/time
so... if you are thinking of buying morrowind like i did, don't coz it is so lame

They're a lot of people who loved Morrowind and still do. I'm thinking of starting another game myself soon. As for the combat, are you sure it wasn't just that your skill with the particular weapon was low?

It's always hard to go back to a previous generation of games. I might have hugely enjoyed Wolfenstein 3D in high school or the original Bard's Tale on the PC-XT, but that doesn't mean that I'd enjoy them as much now. Games and my tastes/tolerances have changed too much. That might be what you're experiencing with Morrowind, Staffnoq.

Welcome to RPGnet. If you were disappointed in Morrowind for $50, perhaps I could interest you in buying the Starcraft battle pack for $75 or Half-Life 1 for $40? Or set you up with a nice Playstation 2 console, only $300?

My dissapointment vs. Morrowind was that we gave u awesome hollowed out crabs structures, majestic mushroom houses and a properly alien setting for Standardized Generic Fantasy Setting#124, hold the Dwarfs.
And that there are like two voiceactors for the entire population of Cyrodill, and they're not too enthusiastic about it.

IMHO, Morrowind with a ton of mods = masterpiece. Morrowind vanilla = unplayable.
BTW, I JUST got Oblivion for 360 and I am really digging it. Seems like they've narrowed the scope, but really emphasized depth and details. Social interact seems very limited, but it's much more alive and animated than Morrowind ever could have been.
Ultimately, my biggest complaint about Oblivion is that they kept the horribly broken and unbalanced leveling system from Morrowind, as well as the same Race Gifts and Birth Signs. For the love of God, why did they keep these? They were terribly unbalanced and boring in Morrowind, and they are pretty much the same here. I feel like they totally blew a really great opportunity for new and different types of characters.

From wikipedia:
House Dres
House Dres is one of the Great Houses of Morrowind. The house concentrates on agriculture and the slave trade and is located in the south-eastern part of Morrowind. Its influence on Morrowind politics has weakened considerably since Morrowind's surrender to the Tamrielic Empire. As it uses slave labour to keep its farms going and is particularly opposed to Imperial power and other races of Tamriel, it is greatly at odds with the values of the Empire (which forbids slave trade).
House Dres is the most conservative of Morrowind’s Great Houses, to the extent that the Daedra worship of the Chimer is still commonly practiced by its members. During the war in which Morrowind became a province of the Empire of Tiber Septim, it was one of the Houses, along with House Indoril and House Redoran, to resist Imperial forces.
More recently, after the events of Morrowind, House Dres has apparently undergone some significant changes. Since then, King Hlaalu Helseth has outlawed slavery in Morrowind, but Dres has allied with Helseth and is apparently finally accepting Imperial rule. Currently, the reasons and motivations for this change, as well as the effect of the outlaw of slavery on House Dres, are unknown.
House Dres holds no territory on the island Vvardenfell. Its territory is all located on the mainland of Morrowind, along the southern border with Black Marsh. The capital of House Dres is Tear.
I don't think they were all too well represented in the game, I don't recall them at least.
Shame you didn't ask about House Indoril, where I could have quoted something about their strong presensce in the City of Necromunda ;)

That's because, like the Wikipedia entry explains, Dres doesn't hold lands on the island of Vvardenfell, the territory that's modeled in the game.
(With the exception of Mournhold and Solstheim, of course.)

Actually, it's a little different - in Oblivion, level-raises are based on failures, as I ecall, so you take longer to level when you have high skill. Morrowind was the exact opposite.

Why, because I should speak no ill of the dead? I wasn't offended by tetsujin's comments in the thread, I just don't agree with him about the quality of the quests in Morrowind. In fact, it reminded me of just how little I agreed with his opinions on almost everything.
EDIT: As it adds nothing to the thread, and really wasn't worth commenting on, you're correct in that I shouldn't have brought it up.

Because "I don't like you and disagree with almost everything you say" isn't something that is considered polite to say unprovoked to anyone, living or dead?
That would be my guess.
Also, it lends the implication that you hold personal grudges against those who disagree with you on something as petty as Morrowind, which is absurd. A game should be at least as good as System Shock 2 before you get disgusted over the sad freaks who can't see its genius. :)
