Most of ours, spanning 10 years of LARP'ing, can be found at my friend's gallery here (http://42.berget.dk/pictures.htm).

Pics from my SteamPunk LARP is available here (http://s17.photobucket.com/albums/b85/JacobKlunder/SteamPunk/), 3 pages worth.

I'll see if I can hunt down some more scattered pics.

I haven't been to a CP event in donkey's years. I've got family who still go and still try to get us to return. In fact, I found a picture of my cousin's missus on one of your links!

I've heard good things about CP's player vs. monster battles. IIRC it was still faction vs. faction when I was attending.

So Wulf, you're in the Gryphons faction? I thought all the Vikingy types were in the Wolves.

They've been concentrating on cooperative battles against large outside forces for a few years. The Nithings, the Greenskin invasion, the Blood Queen, now the Swarm.
So Wulf, you're in the Gryphons faction? I thought all the Vikingy types were in the Wolves.
Due to some distasteful politics, the Gryphons were renamed the Algaia and have gone through major changes (and 4 LGs...). I was Vikingy when I started because I had the kit from re-enactment, but I joined the Gryphons without knowing anything about CP because the guy I went with was there. I'm now a Beastman, but I stuck with the Gryphons/Algaia as there such a good bunch of folks.

Here's a small selection of photos (http://www.ca.runnymede.camarilla.org.uk/social/photos.shtml) from a game I used to be involved in (as an ST and a player, at various points) - Camarilla UK's Runnymede Cam/Anarch game.

The photos span from the early days of the game through to it's latter days... although not with many in between.

Alas, I'm even in a few of them.

That is indeed Hector, playing Quamar Zaki, an Eshu with questionable fashion taste. (Though to be fair, he was moving that weekend and didn't have access to his usual attire.)

This is our Dark Elf group from Stulaaria I: The Wedding. I'm the tall, pale guy. The woman with black curls is my fiancee, by the way.

The guy without facepaint was allergic to the stuff, and spent most of the LARP masked like a ninja... He's not masked in the pictue
re because the mask was lost during a rather forceful (but very, very cool) de-masking shortly before the end.

Those are fantastic!

They totally take away the problem of figuring out whether someone is a dwarf or just a stout person with a beard.

I love the way the facial hair is attached to the prosthetics and used as a border between the latex and skin.

Does one of you make the facial prosthetics? Is it possible for other larpers to get hold of them, or would we need to make our own?

The outfits are nice, but I must admit for my tastes the face masks look far too cartoony. I do realize LARP aesthetics vary a lot from place to place, and I don't mean to knock it at all.

Like I said, tastes vary. I would much prefer a minimum of make-up effects and doing the main impression with clothing, equipment and (particularly) acting. Make-up and masks, particularly very blatantly artificial ones like the dwarf masks there, would tend to distract IMO - call attention to the artificiality of the whole thing.

This goes of course not only for dwarves but for most humanoid creatures. I'll try to find a few more examples of what I mean. And again, I'm not knocking anyone else's taste.

Iskander
06-13-2006, 02:05 AM
Indeed tastes vary. We got the masks for our organisation because we needed a lot of npc dwarfs, and it is not easy to make that clear through clothing and make up effects for npc's (takes too much time, and specially too specific clothing, which we didn't have)

We were quite taken by them, because as Ryan said:
"They totally take away the problem of figuring out whether someone is a dwarf or just a stout person with a beard"

So you can buy them at morbid masks in the uk.

http://www.morbid.demon.co.uk/gold-digger-thumb.jpg

The masks with the shields, hammers and clothing make us look like dwarfs. So it is possible for a large person to play a dwarf. Off course the background and our roleplay finishes it.

Theo, how do you go about creating orcs, goblins, skavens or other monsters. Do you also use make-up, instead of masks?

Theo Axner

I appreciate that. Needs and circumstances vary tremendously, as do of course "traditions". Speaking of traditions, Scandinavian LARP culture is probably more hung up on "authenticity" than anywhere else. I suspect this has to do with the fact that in Sweden, Norway and Finland there was until recently hardly any historical reenactment scene and our LARP culture has instead developed to fill much the same slot.

So you can buy them at morbid masks in the uk.

http://www.morbid.demon.co.uk/gold-digger-thumb.jpg

Ah, Morbid Masks! :) That brings back some fond memories. My club bought a whole bunch of masks from them back in '93, some of which survived as props for years. I've probably still got my Freddy-like "Burns" mask somewhere.

Theo, how do you go about creating orcs, goblins, skavens or other monsters. Do you also use make-up, instead of masks?

I don't, personally (I've never played a dwarf either, being lanky and beardless), but speaking about Swedish LARPs in general - and making reservation for huge variation - the most common thing is a combination of make-up, occasional partial masks (often homemade) and prosthetics. There is a certain tendency to emphasize other equipment, like clothing and armour, over makeup, which I think is a good idea.

For example, check out the three orcs in this photo album (http://album.fotolabo.net/altiapp/amp/amp.fcg?GSTLOGIN=&ALBUMID=IcG4wOJxgN&PASSWD=IcGJnS3DAM&LANG=se) (can't direct link) - far right, second from the top. These costumes are of course among the top of the heap.

In a way, among the most distinctive orc stylings I've seen were on a small and very demanding LARP set in Middle-Earth a few years ago (I wasn't there myself though, only seen pictures). Makeup and masking was very minimalistic and the main emphasis was on equipment - basically, they were made to look like 15th-century footsoldiers minus the gaudy colours, everything instead being grimy and black, grey and brown leather and metal - and particularly the roleplaying. Apparently it mostly worked very well.

The only pic I could find from this event is unfortunately in b&w, but the orcs' skins were made-up in a sickly pale yellowish tone rather than the more conventional black or grey. It was different but it worked. It looks better when you see a lot of them at the same time, all in grimy armour and rusty helmets.

http://fea.sverok.net/forsvara%20fantasyn/orchmedtand.jpg

But of course, it's also a question of what you're setting out to do. The organizers of "In the Shadow of the Ring" (the Middle-earth LARP) were going for an extremely "realistic", down-to-earth vision of ME, in keeping with the game's focus on the poor nameless grunts in the War of the Ring (the game was about a Gondorian Ranger outpost being besieged and eventually stormed by the orcs). A more high-fantasyish game may require more outlandish costumes.

I've been browsing through a lot of the photo albums you posted and I must admit that the quality of costumes is stunning.
It's getting better here in Belgium, but we are far from the high level standard you guys seem to uphold.

A friend of mine is part of the Ordo Solis and has been to Sweden for larps. In fact his girlfriend is Swedish (what larp can be good for  ). So maybe I should go with them for a visit to a scandinavian larp. See how you guys do it.

Anyway the orcs are fantastic!!
