View Full Version : Looking for something new

In case the title was a bit too ambiguous, I'm looking for a new larp to run/play. I'm not interested D&D-esque larps and would dearly like to get away from white wolf. I'm after a long term game so Cthulhu's probably out as well (at least the way I play it anyway). I also enjoy long walks and socialising.
Basically, what I'm after is a modern day/near future setting with a system that doesn't involve rock-paper-scissors or decks of cards.
I'm not really interested in foam weapon systems. Boffers are right out, far too reminiscent of Gladiators (contenders...ready) and another, little known setting called 'Suppository Wars: The Squelching'
So if anyone can help me find a system and setting that fits the bill, I'd be very, very grateful (but not in a pervy way).
No RPS, no cards, no boffers...
Now do you feel about systems using tokens?

Well the main reason I don't like the idea of using cards is that they're too easy to misplace, 'secretly borrow' (to quote someone I know), or accidentally have cards you shouldn't. Plus it can be a pain to carry around cards all the time.

If you use a paper/scissors/rock system try using poker chips instead. I have and it works great. Red=rock, blue=scissors, white=paper. No more people trying to figure what you will bid next because YOU don't know what you will bid next.
Good luck trying to find a non boffer, no P/S/R, no card system. Even better luck trying to find a near future non MET game that dose not eat two or three characters a game.

Maybe something Scandanavian?

The poker chips idea is interesting, but I don't really like the idea of getting all the players to carry stuff around. Not only that, but I'm trying to get away from the MET system.
A friend of mine came up with a no challenge system for larp a few years ago. It worked ok but was too easy to abuse. I was kinda hoping to find something like that but with the bugs taken out.
The setting isn't too important as long as the system can be modified to modern without too much trouble.
I appreciate the replies though, guys.

Any good diceless system works really well as a larp. I'd steer clear of prop systems (like new marvel which is resource allocation based) but amber or a similar system would be berfect. Simple as hell. Compare numbers and at your option add situational modifiers and that's it. No rolling, drawing, or funny number generating. It's less forgiving, of course, but I don't mind that. I like it, in fact. it means that if the guy you're fighting is a better fighter than you then you're in trouble and you'd better cheat, run, or live at his mercy.

I like a straight up number comparison - higher number wins, but I cxan appreciate peoples disdain for it and the lack of incentive to try at something or combat a more powerful foe.
Other than that I've got nothing (Unless you accept the Dave rule which is anyone called Dave wins - unless countered by the Bryan protocol which states that any one called Bryan will explode at somepoint in the game taking you with them. - including Daves).
If we can sort out rules howabout "Adventure!"

The system in question was based on number comparison. It works ok but you need a bit more complexity to make it interesting if nothing else.
I thought the Dave Rule was the one where you attack people randomly then get put down by your mates;)
Adventure! would cool, though it's still white wolf and still ST system-esque. Dunno, I like the pseudo-political type influence stuff from vamp I'd like that to be involved somewhere. Although that's easy enough to sort out separately so it's not a big deal.
EDIT: Typofairies
On the Amber thing; I like it.
Give everyone a rating from one to five. Higher rating wins, except where there are modifiers; on ties, the acting character wins...
Like this:
Fighting
My character has a three fighting, you have a four. I lose. Unless I get a bonus.
+2 from Backstab
I'm starting the fight by sneaking up behind you and touching my prop knife to your back. I do this so you, the player, don't notice until I touch you with it. I say "Ambush". This is a +2. I hit.
...It does mean you need to codify your traits and bonuses pretty hard, though.

I can't precisely remember the Nobilis: A Game of Powers rules, but IIRC they fulfill this.

Well if you used Dramatic Editing / Drama Points / Plot Points as well as number comparison, it should give you a system where the day to day actions are arbitrated without breaking immersion and the players still have a chance to sway things their way - but in such a way that should add to the story instead of detracting from it.

I've heard a bit about Nobilis. It sounds intriguing.
