My wife is and educator who is not very interested in teaching in the public school system. She has spent quite a bit of time exploring alternatives to the standard school paradigm. She is also an avid gamer woh has wanted to find ways incorporate RPG's with education to allow kids to imagine other lives and worlds. Some of the outcomes of introducing kids to RPG's could be accessability to empathy through character interaction, exploration of interpersonal relationships and a jump start on critical thinking skills.
When I saw that you were working on a RPG for kids, I was reminded of the conversations I had with her on the topic. Is there anything you can tell us about the game? Perhaps why you thought this game needed to be made or why you think it'll sell?
I think it's great that a kids game is being made. Many gamers are getting older and having kids, so an early introduction to the Cult of Geeks and Imaginators may be well timed.....

Thanks for your interest, but I can't say a lot about the game at this point. As I noted in the column, I won't be producing it until next year. While the game industry generally is pretty good about not ripping off ideas, it does happen occasionally. And ideas aren't copyrightable.

The growing number of gamers who have children is one reason behind the idea of an rpg for kids. I think a lot of parents are looking or will be looking for ways to introduce their children to gaming. Plus, I see a lot of kids at conventions without many games geared to the younger ages.

Also, children are a good entry into sales to non-gamers. Persuading someone who has never gamed to buy a 200-page RPG tome for themselves is kind of tough. But persuading them to buy a 48-page introductory game for their child seems easier -- they already buy games for their kids, so it's just another kind of game.

You have a couple of places to look before Firefly publishes a game:

and look for Sam Chupp, rogue ex-White Wolf madman who runs beautiful LARPs and turned his talents to running a game called "Stones" (or suchlike) for kids.
