OK. I thought they would fit in the gaming fiction quite nicely. Especially since they have edition (online versions have extra materials).
I'm happy to have them, but they've got issue numbers, monthly publication dates, editors, artists, and story titles, which should all be dealt with properly. And, since I've got a vision of a comic index sometime in the future, I want to make very sure it's all done right. So, it might be a week or two before I can release them, but rest assured, they're there;).

I've put the 8 issues of Avalon Hill's Heroes magazine that I have into the Index. It still needs V2,#2 and V2,#3, so if you've got those, please put them in.

Last question, who found the covers for those Vortext magazines? I own the 2 I put in, and I thought I was the only one who had bought them. :D
There's now a complete index of Vortext:

Here's a question: When assigning a connected entry to a magazine article, is it possible to assign just one edition, or can you only link to the main ID?

Only the main ID, currently. However the edition is usually revealed by the system version.

You can also go back and edit the article name after it's been released, which might help.

Someone uploaded a boatload of White Dwarf magazines. I'll have to see if I have any that's not posted but I don't think so. All mine are low numbers too.
There's a bunch of Dragons as well. I have continuous 29 through 192 with some additional on either end so I'll just keep uploading my odd ones and let the Dragon ones get fleshed out. I'll upload Dragon covers to fix the ones that are wrinkled. The first 20 or so issues I'd reference but from then on I'd just xerox out the articles I wanted and bagged them so mine are all in New condition :)
Some very interesting magazines out there though. Great artwork on some :) Thanks for uploading them and thanks to ShannonA for the opportunity to see them.

I've got a complete run of the good White Dwarfs (1-100) and I've been inputting those, so I think we're good there.
However I'd heartily suggest inputting the low Dragons and any weirdo magazines;).
And definitely, replacement covers are good. A good chunk of those are mine, and my Dragons before 150 or so are pretty trashed.

The magazines have been showing me some gaps in our categorization.
I just did a big add of four stat categories--characters, items, spells, and monsters--which should get most of them. I'm going to do updates for all the obvious series, which should catch most things.
The two categories that continue to befuddle me are new character classes and races, especially for AD&D where this is all rules based. I could be sold on them being Background: Group, Other Rules, or even Stats. Any thoughts for the best categorization there?

Other Rules seems like the best catagory to me. Character classes, after all, are rules for creating characters. Characters created with those rules would fall under stats, if that makes sense. I pretty much use the same guidelines for monsters, magic items, etc. Rules for creating them, Other Rules. Examples already created, Stats.

A couple of notes here for the magazines:
1. Can you update the cheat sheet on the right side of the page with just basic descriptions of the Categories? Something to guide those of us who are entering in magazines. Sometimes I'll put in one thing and a day or two later something else will come to me about the same sort of item and I'll pick a different one :) Most of them are pretty clear but others might not be quite as clear and a little direction would make the entries more consistant.
2. Can you add a Reset Form button to reset the fields? I entered in "High Fantasy" for one of the reviews but it hadn't been entered in the main game system yet (same with Odysseus and Azhanti High Lightning). The difference here is that there's a D&D "Wilderlands of High Fantasy" which was returned when I entered in "High Fantasy". Since that's not right, I tried to clear it but couldn't. When I cleared the Game Title, it brought up all the game titles that have ever been entered. Fortunately one of the other reviews was for Tunnels and Trolls so I could continue but a reset form or other way to reset the top review section would be great :)

Also, when I select "Other" for game system and hit <tab>, I get a popup error:
No XML Response Was Returned By Function xarticleSystem.
Probably need an entry for "Other" so the function can retrieve something or bypass xarticleSystem if game system == "Other" in the javascript :)

Also :D
Maybe a link that opens a new window with a brief description of the Review selection. For example, I entered in "Skull & Crossbones" but I don't know for sure that the S&C I'm looking at in the magazine is the same S&C that's been entered in the game database.
Don't open a window automatically, just a link that'll pop up a tile with info, like publisher and author and game system (reviews usually include this).

Are you talking about on the data entry page? Because on the actual review page you can just click the link symbol to click through to the main item, as long as the review has been linked.

In the drop down box for Column (again magazines), you have several duplicates:
Arcane Lore
In The Cauldron
Rogue's Gallery (and Rogues' Gallery :) )
Tales of the Order... (and Tales of the order...)
The Marvel-Phile
And "What is Pla y By Mail?" should be fixed :)
If it's automatically pulling them out, there are probably just spaces in the wrong place I guess. The apostrophies could be explained. There's a Creature Feature and Creature Features entry. I might consider those errors except that I entered them both in :)
Just some tidying up is all :)

I just finished up entering The VIP of Gaming, minus issue one, which I don't have. I've also previously mentioned that I was looking for someone to enter Heroes #8-9. So, to keep it all together, if you have these, I'd love to see them entered:
* The VIP of Gaming #1
* Heroes V2 #2, Heroes V2 #3
(All three, I suspect, some of the ugliest "professional" gaming magazines around.)

The really sad thing is that I've got sooo many fanzines from just a slightly later period that are much higher quality. I guess VoG and Heroes were some of the last magazines put together with paste-up rather than DTP, and they clearly show that the publishers didn't know how to do so.

Regarding the seperation of the Stat books, do we really need a "Deities" catagory? Are there enough of the Deities & Demigods-type books to make it worthwhile? A "Vehicles" catagory could be helpful, however. This type is different enough from "Items" that it would be a worthwhile distinction.

The magazine's name varies (between Campaign Builder's Guide and Campaign Builders' Guide), as does the guild's name (in similar way). I believe the latter is the current official naming scheme, but the former is used in the three first e-zines.
IIRC, there is some way of making the two ways of writing the name register as one. It would be quite appropriate in this case.

Been wrestling over reporting this, but I figure you should know. I've posted 5 new editions to existing entries in the past few weeks and haven't gotten credit for any of them. If you're talking about less than a few hundred copies, it's probably not worthwhile unless there's some particularly good content, notable writers, or something else that would bring it to people's attention.
If you're talking about more copies or content that people might want to look up at some point, definitely.

If it's really a periodical, laid out just like the others, and just neglects to have a number, list it as V1 #1. This is probably the case.
If it's really a gaming supplement that just happens to share the KotD name, enter it as a regular gaming supplement.
It's clearly a fine line that takes judgement.

The first is pretty much the case.
I figured that's what you would recommend, but figured I'd ask in case there were any tricks I was missing out on:)

That's interesting: Nobilis has dropped from 8.31 to 7.58 in a day or so. A change in the software, or did a bunch of users get together and start giving it ones without leaving any comments?

The whole set of rankings have changed, so I guess they must have found a new way of counting. Every third vote rather than every second vote, maybe?

I think I screwed up the review integration with some other work I've been doing. I'm going to fix it up tomorrow.

Feature Requests:
Preamble: There seems to be about three different spots where a list of stuff is displayed. They are all different, and the various styles are a touch odd to get to.
Requests:
1) That in a search, the user can select "Cover Gallery" etc as an option to display after finding results, instead of the current search for results, then choose display options. This is perhaps obfuscated by the fact that the display options panel has "Search Options" or something like that on it, and the button is labelled "Search".
2) That in the user collection display, the lists can have the headers as the main display does. That is, with a sort option, the big purple bar with "AD&D 2nd Edition", for example, appearing to clearly separate the categories.
3) That in the user collection display, the display options may be used - that is, the "Cover Gallery", "Checklist", etc options.
4) That in a series display, the display options may be used.
Result: All the display pages will have a unified look and feel to them, allowing the user to display the index in the available options from any page.
(In other words: I wanna look at the pretty covers of the books I own *whine* :p I also want to rate books, but I only want to rate the books I own, but I also don't want to keep flipping between the main list and individual book entries to do so)
Another feature request, in a far less formal writeup: I would very much like a display option that is an integration of the Cover Gallery and the Checklist. I know I often visually identify books based on cover, rather than using the title. This would allow me (and others like me) to quickly edit collection/rating information while viewing the appropriate covers.

That's been on my TODO list for a while, though the series display is more difficult than the collection display because it's set up totally differently. Changing the old search-option link lists to pop-up menus was the first step.

I'll have to think about that one a bit more carefully.

I've noticed some of the rankings have changed a bit over the last week, and further investigation shows that a lot of it was because of the recent votes by Simple Man.
If you read his complete list it looks, for the most part, like either someone's pissed in his cornflakes recently, or he's committed himself to buying crap books he hates for the last 30 years or so! :D
Bloody hilarious read! Keep it up! :)

The rating sources for Nobilis (http://index.rpg.net/display-entry-ratings.phtml?mainid=132) (note the lack of reviews).
Entry of Nobilis (http://index.rpg.net/display-entry.phtml?mainid=132) (note the presence of reviews).
I noticed the same thing with D&D PHB (3rd ed).

It seems to be all of the entries, but it looks like the reviews are still affecting the rankings. Check out Pierced Heart, which has reviews but no ratings, and the ranking is higher than the Bayesian average.

Made two mistakes entering the ENnies:
1. Death in Freeport (http://index.rpg.net/display-entry.phtml?mainid=1713) didn't win the ENnie for Best Adventure in 2002 (just 2001).
2. Monte Cook's Arcana Evolved: Spell Treasury (http://index.rpg.net/display-entry.phtml?mainid=1977) didn't win a "Gold for Best Art". There is no such thing; interior and cover art are separate categories. The category can be deleted.
There have been a ridiculous number of different ENnie awards over the years, so I didn't bother to mimic every wording change when the award seemed to cover the exact same ground (for instance, Best Production Values is probably exactly the same as the older Best Graphic Design and Layout, and Best Monster Supplement is now Best Adversary or Monster Product; I favored the newer, more inclusive titles). I did however split out 2004's division into d20 and Non-d20 awards, which seemed significant.
I'm sure it's on the plate, but the ability to view the award winners would be useful.
Any plans to have awards influence the ratings? Might be tricky, but valuable.
Separately, there are still two Eisens and Avalons (http://index.rpg.net/display-series.phtml?seriesid=581).

The "+" character doesn't seem to be showing up in the article summaries. See <a href=http://index.rpg.net/display-article.phtml?articleid=9453>here</a> and <a href=http://index.rpg.net/display-article.phtml?articleid=3033>here</a>, for example. There should be +'s next to those numbers.

Couple more minor ones:
The Ennie award is "Special Judges' Award: Silver for Innovation" (with the plural possessive, not the singular "Judge's"; the Gold is correct), and should be changed.
I accidentally created the "Diana Jones Nominee" award and never used it ("Nominee" is under the award category instead of name), so it can be deleted.
M. Paul Buja is a pseudonym used by Paul Czege (http://www.indie-rpgs.com/forum/index.php?topic=16220.msg173365#msg173365), so they can be synonymized.

I'm unstickying this thread to free up some space in RPGnet Open. It's still a great place to report this type of issue, so I suggest SUBSCRIBING to it if you want to stay up on Index stuff.
I'm taking the week off (mostly) to write, so I'll get back to looking at this awards and other recent stuff next week.

I just fixed a bug that was blocking changes to the summaries of existing general information for systems, settings, and publishers. So if you corrected something, you may need to redo so now*.
And if you haven't already, please enter general info on your favorite stuff. You can click "info" on many search pages now, then "add info" if it's not already there.

* The database cell for changes was set to a maximum of 128 characters, so any reasonable sized summaries were getting truncated.
