View Full Version : Buyer Beware: Titan Games

Just wanted to caution people about buying from Titan Games. They quoted me a price for a Swordbearer boxed set and gave me an email address to which I could send Paypal payment. I did so the same day, and then waited a week for them to claim the payment.

I emailed them several times while waiting for them to do so, asking if there was a problem, and if so to please let me know. I finally got word from them today, telling me that somebody else had ordered Swordbearer earlier in the week. Since I was getting this message over a week after I sent payment for an item they had agreed to sell to me, I was confused and asked for a clarification.

I was told that I had sent payment to the incorrect email address, and since they received payment from the other potential buyer first, it went to them. This is despite the fact that I have an earlier email from Titan Games in my saved folder telling me that the address I sent Paypal payment to was the correct one. Well, I hope the other guy enjoys his copy of Swordbearer.

The person from Titan Games expressed his regrets and said that this "happens more often than [he] would like", but that their "website design is over 10 years old and does not have a shopping cart". One might suggest that they update said website.

To be fair, these mistakes do happen, but I can't help but think that if they had emailed me when I asked about the unclaimed payment instead of waiting four days to tell me there was a problem, that this entire situation might have been avoided.

Generally, I've liked dealing with Titan Games when I've done so, but I do agree that they seriously need to revamp their website.

Ditto. Decent people, but I and someone else I know from this board had problems with them getting quantities correct on an order. He ended up phoning them and getting it corrected. I used e-mail.

Guess which one of us ended up with our order coming out correctly in the end :(

So the moral of the story here is not that they're a bad company, but that they're shaky when it comes to conducting business over the internet. Giving them a phone call seems to be the way to go.

Ayup.

I do give them kudos for having some very obscure, OOP stuff at steal prices, too.

No comment:rolleyes:
I have had a love/hate relationship with them, and after an issue at Gencon I have lost a lot of faith with Titan.
Personally I usually deal with Aaron over at Noble Knight and I have never ever had a unfair shake with them, Aaron gets back to me personally withing 24 hours with pricing and he always gives me a fair and square.

Does not mean I will not buy from Titan again, but with some things that have affected me personally I will try NKG first before giving my money to Titan.

Heck, I got a playtest copy of Creeks and Crawdads (that still had an announcement flyer printed on a dot-matrix printer, telling about the playtest game) for ten bucks.

Yeah, they have some really cool stuff sometimes.

Years ago at GenCon, I walked past a dealer's table. He had a 3 foot stack of Swordbearer rules printed on cheap newsprint. He was almost giving those booklets away.

I had played and liked Swordbearer but found some problems with the rules. I'm sure he threw that stack of rules away after GenCon. It's funny how the market changes.

Can't you just buy Swordbearer from Fantasy Games Unlimited (http://www.sden.org/jdr/spaceopera/mirror/fgu/products12.htm) (bottom of the page). From what I can see, they list the Heritage edition of the game in their catalog for $15 with the Dwarven Halls Campaign for $7. A fantasy RPG and all its supplements for under $25! Can't beat that with a stick. kool

Had I known this existed, I probably would have just gone for that. But that site didn't even turn up in a Google search for "Fantasy Games Unlimited" or "Swordbearer RPG". I've already agreed to buy it from somebody on RPG.net. Dang...

Edit: And yet, when I Google "Fantasy Games Unlimited" now, there it is about halfway down the page. Dammit.

Ive dealt with Titan a few times. Once selling a great deal of stuff and a couple times buying. Not only were they great communicators (doing so frequently in my transactions) but were courteous as well.

I'd recommend them actually.

Sorry for your bad experience though.

It seems that I may have caused confusion with my previous post. I have traded and purchased items at Titan Games and have nothing but good feelings about them.

My opinion on what is left of FGU (totally unrelated to Titan Games) is less printable, even in a PG-13 rated forum.

Nothing but love for Titan Games. Bought stuff from them at Gencon, ebay and directly from their site. No problems at all.

I have to concur that Titan Games has done right by me.

I placed a phone order, they took my info, and I got my package later on.

My only wish is that they'd have e-mailed me when they shipped the package, but that's a small issue at most.

I was amazed to snag Grenadier's 25mm Undead War Rhino for $30 + S&H. Yeah, the box was beat up to hell, and the old skool 25mm skellies that come with it are slightly too small by today's scale-creep-ified giants but ...

... dude, it's an undead war rhino! With prisoners in its rib-cage!!!! :D

As to reliability: I was the other party in komradebob's tale. They can get a wee bit confused but are good folks and will rectify a mistake if you give 'em a bell.

We demand pictures!

Heh. Mine is, of course, still unassembled, unpainted, and still in the box. I'll tackle it as soon as I pluck up the courage/ paint more of my mixed manufacturer and scale (25-28mm+) undead army. However ...

Here's a link to a 2002 painting contest (http://www.newwave.org/minis/contest/halloween2002/index2.html). I've also attached one image from the contest.

I've never had a moment's problem with them.

Sorry for your rotten experience though.
