Extra advice: Assume that half the people who are interested won't be able to make it. If you want to run a game with 5 players, find at least 10 people who are interested. You may end up with 6 players, but chance are you're going to lose some people after the game starts anyway.
Oh, and if you live in a college town, check out the college for a gaming club. I walked into a gaming club here (UC Davis), brought out a game no one had ever heard of before (Burning Wheel) and two demos and a month later I have a game with 6 players that's off to an awesome start.
