This appears to be a perfect place to explore this question. The prevailing interpretation of the Paladin in most settings is that he occupies a formal military or law-enforcement position, with suitable authority and responsibilities. (This is not necessarily the case, and it can be interesting to explore a setting in which the gods of good and law simply bestow a Paladin's powers upon someone with no significant social recognition.)

I would like, for the purposes of this thread, to follow the assumption that becoming a Paladin is a sufficiently involved process that for those who complete it, some official recognition is inevitable. How would the local law treat such an order?

And as a side issue, what would a Paladin's oath of investiture/office/law&good/whatever sound like?

It might be useful to bear in mind that while I am an informed amateur semanticist, I have no legal training of any kind.
