View Full Version : [Wild Talents] Greg Stolze's Instant Talent Generator
Arc Dream

So Greg came up with this "One-Roll Talent" gizmo. Roll nine dice, consult charts, splice and chant, and you have a character.
It's neat.
http://www.nemesis-system.com/downloads/one-roll-talents/download.html
My 9d roll came up 10, 9, 2x8, 6, 5, 4, 3. That's one power or power package and a whole lot of background.
Powers (determined by the 2x8): Control [Element] and/or Detect [Element].
Careers (chosen from the unmatched dice): Everyman; pilot.
Events (chosen from the unmatched dice): Adopted; responsible for a death; unjustly imprisoned; feral; child of a notorious supervillain.
Here we go. Comments are welcome, but really this is just for fun.
-----
One of the most infamous Talents of the 1960s went by the name Setekh. Nobody knew who he was, really, but he styled himself the incarnation of the ancient Egyptian deity Set, god of desert storms and chaos. Setekh was clearly insane, and not in an entertaining, comic-book supervillain way. He would shift from literally raining destruction over some offending city to spending weeks in staring isolation.
Of course, in some traditions Set was god of fertility. In 1967, Setekh deemed he needed an heir, or even better a whole line of them. His ensuing depredations were among his most unsavory, and the fact that he particularly favored superhuman consorts, willing or not, led to his downfall. Any number of Talents soon were out for blood, and Setekh was physically obliterated in a battle with half a dozen of the most dangerous. Nobody mourned.
Henry Regan, born in early 1968, was found abandoned shortly after birth in downtown San Diego. He was quickly adopted; whatever name his birth mother gave him, if any, nobody knows. He grew up altogether ordinary in the suburbs. He always loved planes, and surprised nobody when he became a helicopter pilot after high school. Marriage followed; two kids of his own born in 1993 and 1997. He was on his way to being the most normal family man on the block.
On his 30th birthday, everything fell apart.
The day started fine. He drove to the airfield, headed for the hangar, and then the clearest blue sky turned mauve and some impossible sheet of energy sent him flying across the tarmac.
As Regan blinked, nearly deafened and slowly realizing he sported several broken bones, an old man in a shabby suit stood over him, hating.
"She killed herself, you know. Couldn't take the memory of it. Of you. Of the thing growing inside her. The Amazing Kite, Cleveland's savior, cut her own wrists on our third anniversary. And here you are again."
Regan didn't know what the hell the old man was talking about. He said so. The old man spat on him. Then the old man killed him.
But it didn't take.
Bloody and broken, Henry Regan stood up in a dazed fugue. Punched the old man in the face, shattering his jaw. Called down a hurricane wind to knock the old man off-balance, like it was the most natural thing in the world.
The old man launched yet another death-glow but it went astray, and Henry snapped the rest of the way. He tackled the old man and hit him again and again, breaking bones with every blow. Eventually the old man died.
Regan ran for it. Freak lightning and sandstorms drove the police off his trail. His mind was utterly warped. Sometimes he dreamed of old Egyptian gods with heads like wolves and jackals. Sometimes he dreamed of his father -- his real father, insane as they come, dead before Regan was ever born.
After a year, he woke up. The storms subsided. The police caught him.
Self-defense didn't wash -- nobody else saw any deadly purple light -- and Regan spent eight years in a Talent-security prison for manslaughter. As with many Talents, parole was not an option. He served every day the judge handed down.
He went in confused and terrified, hating himself. He came out, somehow, better. It was ugly and it was violent, but in prison he learned about his father, and he was able to surmise pretty accurately about his mother. He learned about the dead old man and his long-dead wife, Ace "Negator" Wilson and Gillian "The Kite" Wilson, Talents themselves who had done some good things back in the day. He learned how to cope with his abilities. He learned not to be so afraid that he really was his father's son.
Henry Regan could be a poster child for prison reform, a case study of what happens when the system goes right, if he wasn't so utterly miserable. The strain of it destroyed his marriage; his wife is now happy with a producer in Burbank and his kids have two half-siblings. Regan is out of work -- certainly no chance of a pilot's license any time soon -- and he just knows there are more bitter survivors of his father's insane rampage still out there, not to mention friends of the old man.
It's time to start over.

Lovely! So, about how many points is your typical Godlike character in Wild Talents? I can't even get a superpower at anything below 75...

200-250 is typical. I based the original charts on 250.

Well I'm glad they did! :)
I saw "Instant" and then when I found a PDF I was all dissapointed. Just lazy I suppose. ;)

Very, very true. It's certainly more instant than regular character creation, and a useful PDF to have. I wasn't putting it down at all.

Essie Bogandis was voted "Most Likely to Smash Her Own Brains Out Bungee Jumping," before she got kicked out of school for poor attendance and backchat. But so what? She got a job running a bungee jump platform, and it paid for her NEW favorite hobby -- BASE jumping.
One day, in midair, she saw a bald eagle fly right above her and she thought, "This is the awesomest moment of my life" -- just before a shot rang out and the rare bird, the very SYMBOL of AMERICA, started spiraling towards the spiny rocks of a deep canyon. Heedless of her own safety ('cause, y'know, Essie's not really that bright) she deftly maneuvered her chute so that she caught the bird in midair and cradled it gently to a safe landing.
But it was no ordinary bird. It was, in fact, a powerful spirit of the winds, one that had loved and overseen the brightest ideals of America since its inception. Standing for democracy, equality and freedom, it was now truly endangered. Somehow, Essie knew all this as she wept over the bird. Then she heard a voice of cruel command say, "Why don'tcha jest step back an' let me finish my bizness, lil' lady." She looked up into the evil, money-green eyes of The Bigshot.
Just as the eagle spirit had adopted the most idealistic notions of the young nation, The Bigshot had allied itself with greed, short-sightedness, callousness, and the kind of smug self-satisfaction that could give (or sell) pox-ridden blankets to the natives.
He stared down at her, his eyes full of the contempt only a Yale legacy can hold for a woman who did poorly on a racially-biased standardized test, and casually pointed his rifle at her heart.
"Bite me," she said, and he pulled the trigger.
But as her blood mingled with the eagle, as her willingness to give the last full measure of sacrifice for a doomed virtue spilled out on the ground, she and the spirit merged, becoming something greater than either one. She arose changed, an angelic figure with wings made of storm clouds and lightning flashing in her eyes. Now, the entity that was once Essie Bogandis is composed of living virtue. She's as durable as Hope, compelling as Truth, and as inexorable as Justice. Winds and weather are her servants and she dares to stand up to the corrupt and powerful on behalf of the downtrodden and despised.
(Plus, she can fix your VCR with her electronics skills.)

First off, thanks for the pdf AND the online generator.
Second, I've been away from Godlike & the Wild Talents playtest for a couple of years, so I have a question about format of powers:
Say I get 3X4 Telekinesis +5, is that 5 Regular Dice?
Sorry for being dense.
Agent Oracle
02-12-2007, 05:32 PM
it's 5 regular dice, or 3 regular and 1 "hard"... or 1 regular, 2 "hard"... or 1 regular, 1 wiggle... however you break it down...
I think that's it at least...

I'll go out on a limb here and say yes. Unless it says HD or WD, it's regular dice (unless, of course, the powers is in levels instead of dice). It's actually +5 to the 2x4 level for TK, so if you get 3x4 the total is 6+2WD (6 regular and 2 wiggle).

Peter "Pate" Potter never even realized he was a superhero. Sure, he was always stronger than the other kids, but he attributed it to being big - a gift from the parents he never knew, along with his paper-pale skin and red eyes and curiously sharp features. And Pate was certainly big, but he topped out at a reasonable 270 pounds. He played football and never questioned how he was able to plow through linemen even heavier than he was as if they were midgets, or why he never got injuries even after bad hits. His athletic prowess gave him a sense of social invincibility, leading him to be a hard-drinkin' bullyin', arrogant hellion. He came within a hair of date raping the girl next door, and it was only when she cried and screamed that he realized, no kidding, there were women out there who weren't attracted to him and weren't going to change their minds.
Realizing what he'd become, he decided to take a long, hard look at his behavior and rethink what it was all about... but it was too late. Everyone trusted the girl next door, and it wasn't like her story was unbelievable. He was kicked out of school, lost his college scholarship, and was offered another one by a coach so odiously corrupt, so obviously okay with the idea of date rape, that he gave up on college altogether.
He wandered.
Cut off from family, friends and intended future, Pate despaired. Sliding into crime wasn't a decision, just the path of least resistance. Then, one day, he was abducted by... THeM.
He doesn't know why he thinks of them as 'THeM' complete with funky capitalization, but they were glowing and graceful and they took him up into the sky. He was in a ship -- or was it a palace? -- of gold and brushed steel and radiant crystals. They operated on him, painlessly opening his skull and his body with mere gestures.
>>he/is/not/the/one<< Pate heard the words in his mind, not with his ears.
{{but/he/could/become}} It was the same voice, but Pate somehow knew it was a different one of THeM.
>>he/lacks/compassion/we/should/discard/him<<
{{compassion/can/be/installed}}
>>no/telepathy/can/be/installed/compassion/must/be/learned<<
Then he slept again, and when he woke the two beings were again leaning over him.
>>forget<< came mouthlessly from one.
{{remember}} emerged from the other, and then he was back on the ground.
In Korea.
He remembered THeM, and he knew there were things lost to him. He remembered their language of chimes and tones. More, he remembered that he could fly. His abductors had known that, even though he never had.
He'd always had the potential, he'd just never tried.
What was he? Where did he come from? What was expected of him? Pate doesn't know, but he knows compassion is important, he knows he can fly, and he knows the thoughts of those around him often enough to get in lots of trouble.

=================
Julie Kaminski had always worshipped her older brother, Isaac, but then, she wasn't alone. Star athlete, class president, Rhodes scholar -- she didn't like to admit it to herself, but she couldn't help but feel envious at times. Occasionally, she worried that her friends were just nice to her to try and get closer to him. It seemed like Julie spent her whole adolescence trying to find some light of her own out of Isaac's shadow.
So while he went off and did his work for the government (something to do with the State Department -- he was always vague about that), Julie carved her own path as a freelance journalist and blogger.
Until the night he showed up at her apartment, bleeding and desperate.
The story he told was muddled, but it seemed that Isaac's diplomatic work had just been a cover. He'd actually been working as a highly-successful (naturally) field agent for a black budget department within the Pentagon's Office of Strategic Operations. But he'd inadvertantly stumbled upon a deeper secret: the OSO had either gone rogue, or worse, had been co-opted by some other organization. Now, former friends and colleagues were after him. What's more: he'd stolen something, a device of some kind. He knew the lengths that the OSO had pursued to get it in the first place, and he hoped to use it as a bargaining chip with his own pursuers.
Just then, there was the tinkle of broken glass and a clatter as a small, cylindrical object punched through her window and landed on the floor beside the siblings. Julie screamed and Isaac groaned as he threw his wounded body across hers. Then there was nothing but a roar and a bright light.
When Julie regained consciousness, she could tell that there were others in the room. She felt smothered and couldn't move. She realized that Isaac's lifeless body was holding her down and keeping her hidden -- for the moment. As she felt one silent footstep after another move closer, she suddenly heard Isaac shout, "NOW!"
Without thinking, she leapt up, passing straight through Isaac's corpse. Two startled looking, black clad men immediately turned their silenced pistols her way, firing shot after shot. "Move Julie! Take them out," Isaac urged. Ignoring the gunfire, she could somehow follow the actions of both targets -- wait, they were men, not targets, weren't they? but they moved so slowly... As she sidestepped out the door, she extended a palm towards each shooter and a piercing beam of white hot light seared through them, removing the gun arm of one, and forcing the other one to double over gut shot.
=================
Isaac Kaminski is dead, or at least his body is. Thanks to the 'dimensional rethreader' he stole, some part of him, maybe his soul, was able to escape his death and attach itself to his sister, Julie. Most of the time, they don't share a mind and communicate verbally. Sometimes Julie can actually see Isaac as they converse. No one else can though. But when the need arises, they can energize the rethreader, fuse and take advantage of their combined experience and perception. As a side effect, Julie/Isaac can phase through solid material, while the dissonances between their respective mental oscillations generates an energy that they can release as highly accurate, almost seeking bolts of white fire.

I thought I'd try this so I went ahead and slapped in for a 1000-point layered cake.
This is the result. It's kind of like when Bruce Banner, the Sorcerer Supreme, got irradiated in the gamma blast... Or my Awakened Akashic Brotherhood Get of Fenris Ahroun Werewolf from DisneyHorrorLand fell through a dimensional portal to smash puny homids.
I do like that Bruce Banner, irradiated Sorcerer Supreme idea though...
Either way there's no background element tags. Try and wrangle a story and spend that remaining 125 points on Stats.
I'm gonna try 666 points and create the talent called Antichrist.

Monster Body: 3x1 Permission: Power Theme Monster! Heavy Armor +3, +4+2HD BODY, Extra Tough +1
Flight is off the chart by 1, so here's level 5. The leftover dice total to 25 points. Use them for additional dice for skills, stats, or miracles.
Flight: 5x2 Permission: One Power, Flight 7+2HD+1WD, Speed Boost Extra +5 (This multiplies the top speed by 32, which means the character flies at 32,768 mph.), Navigate: Sea/Air +2 (This is Flight with A,D,R,U, if you were wondering.) Permission: One Power, Go First in Flight +6 (When you roll a successful Flight set, it is timed as if it was six wider.)
Sneaky is off the chart by 2, so here's level 5. The leftover dice total to 50 points. Use them for additional dice for skills, stats, or miracles.
Sneaky: 5x3 Permission: Power Theme Sneaky, Power Mimic +5 (A,D,R,U), Invisibility +5, SENSE +1 (That’s D,R,U Invisibility), Telepathy +5 (A,D,R,U), Dead Ringer +1+WD (R,U), Metamorph +2 (A,D,R,U)
Telekinesis is off the chart by 1, so here's level 5. The leftover dice total to 25 points. Use them for additional dice for skills, stats, or miracles.
Telekinesis: 5x4 Permission: Unseen Force Power Theme, Telekinesis +6+2WD (A,D,R,U), Heavy Armor +2, Block +3 (The armor is a TK force field. Block is D,R), Harm with A,R only, +1+3HD and 2 levels of Deadly (This is some kind of TK-based attack that can only be used in combat. It does Width Shock and Width +1 Killing damage. Do you up a treat, mate.)
Power Beam: 4x5 Permission: One Power, Harm +2 +2WD, Range Booster Extra +1, Friendly Fire Extra, Penetration Extra +1, Spray 3, Deadly Extra +2 (Instead of being penalized for multiple attacks, the bolt gets 3d extra. It also does an two extra points of Shock. Or, if you prefer, no extra Shock but an extra point of Killing damage. The bolt can never harm anyone the Talent considers a friend or noncombatant, it ignores a level of Heavy Armor and it reaches 160 yards.)
More Animal Than Man: 5x7 Permission: Power Theme Animal, COORDINATION +2HD, +1 BODY, Multitask +1, Go First +1, Deadly Extra +2, either Flight or Unconventional Move 5d (Pick one based on the animal in question, natch. Either one is A,D,R,U.) Alternate Form +2HD (That’s an A,D,R,U form -- either the animal you picked, or some kind of hybrid of it and human. Y’know, something cool. The BODY boost isn’t attached to the Alternate Form.) Attached to Alternate Form: Control (Animal) +3+2HD, Dodge +9HD, Smell +3 (In either shape, the character can take an extra action without penalty and all his actions are timed as if they were 1 wider. His attacks do an additional point of Killing damage, or 2 Shock, if you prefer, in either shape. But only in his animal body does he get the Smell bonus, animal control and dodge. So now you have some real good reasons to change shape.)
Master of an Element: 3x8 Permission: Elemental Power Theme, Control (Element) +6 (A,D,R,U), Detect Element +5 (R, U), Create (Element) +5 (A,D,R,U) (This could be fire, electricity, stone -- whatever. It’s assumed that all these powers govern the same element.)
Sorcerer: 3x9 Permission: Spellcaster, Permission: Enchanter, Spellcasting +4, Enchantment +7 (A,D,R,U), Amulet: Heavy Armor +1, Amulet: Harm +5 (This ‘amulet’ is a Focus that gives a -2/4/8 break on costs. It is usable by others, destructible, replaceable, upgradable and accessible -- which means they’re gaudy and obvious and any jamoke with a decent disarm result can take it and use it. It doesn’t have to be jewelry, but it does have to be pretty clear as the source.)
Super Genius: 2x10 Permission: Mad Science Power Theme, BRAINS +WD, Gadgeteer +5, Gadget: Insubstantial +2HD (D,R,U) and Multitask +1 (A,D,R,U.
