View Full Version : [Mario Kart: Double Dash] How the F**K do you win at 150cc?

I'm loving this game, and I've won gold cups in all four tracks in 50cc and 100cc.

But how the F**K do you win any races in 150cc? It seems that no matter what kart or driver combo I use, I get my ass kicked by red shell cheapshots from behind any time I approach even 3rd position. Last night I was playing friggin' BOWSER, the toughest mother in the game, and I got shoved OFF THE ROAD by PRINCESS PEACH.

Should I even bother playing the 150cc races, or is it just super-cheap and impossible to win?

It's pretty rare that the computer beats either me of my GF nowadays. We managed to finish pretty much all the cups with a perfect score but I still have to finish All Star Cup with a better score than 150.

You'll get used to the computer.

Should I even bother playing the 150cc races, or is it just super-cheap and impossible to win? You'll just have to adapt your playing style. 150cc isn't tougher because the enemy racers are smarter or faster - it's tougher because they no longer play by the same rules as you. This invalidates most of the strategies you learned in 50cc and 100cc; you'll basically have to "un-learn" the tricks you learned in those modes before you can master 150cc.

I found 150cc to be quite easy actually. It's not until the mirror cup that things get difficult.

Generally, I prefer to use light carts, with good accel. Use a combo of diddy and Koopa for the bananas and shells. If you've got 3 shells spinning around you, that blocks some of the cheap shots, and if you time bananas right, they do as well. Remember to get some blue sparks in the corners.

Powerslide constantly. Pick characters who can get their specials in 1st place-- a backwards bowser shell tends to wreck red shells and AIs.

How do you do those backward shell shots?

How do you do those backward shell shots?

Hold back on the control stick as you throw the shell.

Personally, I favour Bowser and Wario in Bowser's kart as a team up - you may take a while to get in front, and you're in trouble if you screw up, but the shell and bomb specials mean, so long as you can keep on the track, you stay in front.

Are there any "cheat codes" for unlocking the stuff that gets unlocked after 150cc races? Looking around the usual places, I haven't found any, which makes me think there aren't any.

You have to 'snake'. How do you snake? I dunno, but whenever I play multiplayer all I find are asshats that do it. It makes you move like quicksilver on acid.

I won 150cc with the two koopas and the koopa kart. It's light and very maneuverable, and constant red shells is much better for me than bananas or anything else. Daisy is a good alternative to the green koopa.

That's my team too, the only one I can do anything with.

And yes having tripple Red or even Green shells at any point in the race is very helpful!

I can't beat Mirror mode tho. :( Also it's annoying that it's not easier to tell what cups you've beaten on what level yet without delving so deep into the menus.

On long, wide straights, you zig-zag with skid turns, getting the turbo boost each time.

It presumably takes practice, because I can't do it. :p

Also, that's Mario Kart DS, not Double Dash.

The lack of a jump and the wider radius you take on slides in the GC version prevents snaking from being the neccessarily technique it is for victory in the DS version.

In the DS version, it takes practice, but it's an asshat thing to do online because even if you CAN do it, it takes such a toll of your thumb that you probably won't want to do it just to show off against some random internet matchup.

I would suggest trying 150 cc in the two-player co-op mode if you have someone to play it with. Using mini-turbo is much easier when the second player can wiggle the analog stick to get blue sparks. Besides, the other player can use L and R to attack other karts to slow them and steal items.

Also, I think the co-op mode is what makes the game shine. As a single player game, Mario Kart DS is better, but I think the co-op in Double Dash is hard to top.

The team of Troopa and Paratroopa won me a lot of races, as well. Can't remember which car I usually use, though; think it's the green Koopa buggy.

Personally I always rocked out with Toad and Toadette. I'm a big fan of the golden mushroom. And whats not to love about pink mushroom pigtails?

I'd probably be better with the Koopas, but I always liked to let someone else have them so I can gloat if I win anyway. =)~

I completed Mario Cart DS without it. Hell, I rarely even used power slides on corners.

Yeah, I completed DD and DS without even trying to snake.

Haven't played much multiplayer DS, though.

Double-Dash wise, if you find yourself really stuck invite a friend over and let him be your wingman. Agree that he will stay behind you in second place. Have him play as the koopa troopas or another chaff-spamming character combination and you be the toads. Speed boosts + body block decimates the computer.

I wish I could give solo advice, but I've never had any trouble. I seem to be some sort of DD savant.

Just to clarify, am I correct in assuming there are no "cheat codes" for unlocking stuff, and you have to do it "honestly?"

As far as I know, yep. I believe there are ways to download saves, though, and you can always get a friend to unlock stuff for you.

Well, it is super-cheap, but it's quite possible to win with enough practice.

Of course, my favored team is the Toads in the car that mimics a heavy car.

Multiplayer victory, I meant. The AI in that game is something of a pushover.
