Hey, thanks for writing this. I like to see stuff encouraging minis use outside of "battle"type wargaming!:)
I hope you'll write a bit about the economics of buying minis for rpg use. In wargames, usually everyone buys up their own army and has a go at one another when they get together.
RPGs are a bit strange in this regard, because the GM generally controls everything except the individual player characters. If this gets extended into the realm of minis, you get a situation where one guy gets to be responsible for actually buying almost every bit of the minis and probably is responsible for making all of the maps and/or terrain.
I can't see that working out in the long-term ( not even for minis-heads like myself!).
Can you (or anyone) think of some relatively painless way to spread out the monetary and related work work across the whole group?

I'll just add a couple of manufacturers for your delectation.
Black Tree Design (http://www.black-tree-design.com) - 25mm Fantasy and SF including character models and monsters at pretty reasonable prices. They do have Dr Who as one of their ranges which is nice if you fancy being able to chant 'Exter-mine-ate Exter-min-ate' while moving minis round the table.
Ground Zero Games (http://www.groundzerogames.net) - 25mm SF mainly including lots of character models and Manga types. Very good service.

I hadn't thought to bring up the economics of it all in a group setting, honestly, outside of keeping things cheaper. That's something I can certainly bring up, but its been my experience that groups usually try to help... but, you're right, sometimes it is just one person and that's a good idea that I'll include when I move beyond single character miniatures.
