I stopped with minis more than 10 years ago but I still have all the stuff at home. At that time I almost only used one tool, the knife. I used it for everything from cutting to scrapping to flatening things out (it's really simple, just use the knife in a counter-hedge direction for scrapping and flatening).

Of course, that meant that most of time I would hang with small cuts all around my fingers. I always looked at it as part of the hobby. A sportsman gets bruises, a minis hobbist gets cuts.

Yes, it can be, but taking some care to avoid it can reduce that to nearly zero. I've been doing it for many years, and over the course of that time I eventually figured out or was taught how to avoid just about every one of them.

Accidents happen, minimizing the chances of them and their severity is key.
