Having worked in the RPG Industry for a number of years, there are concerns about the health of brick and mortar stores. I want to take this opportunity to make a few suggestions.

Consider adding products the big stores don't carry. This can include CDs, DVDs, action figures, and specialty items like those seen in comic book specialty stores. And, of course, games. You could also ask about out of print items they might want.

Consider having a demo area. One store I go to has a table large enough for six average size people near the front and a list of upcoming events nearby.

Consider offering to get special orders, perhaps with a partial payment up front.

One store owner I know has told me he goes to trade shows, picks up samples of new releases and has his customers play them. Those they like he orders.

Just a few, you know, ideas,

All of your suggestions happen to be what the best gaming store here in the Minneapolis area does.

The Source has the largest RPG,Minis,Manga/anim and comics selection around. They also have novels, DVDs, Swords, and othe geeky stuff we tend to like. :D
