...Some were born to sing the blues!
There was a Journey videogame (http://www.journey-tribute.com/journey/resources/atari2600/). Why am I just learning of this now?

This may very well be the cheesiest game I've ever seen.
Even cheesier than the one where the President of the United States pilots a giant robot.

If there was one Japanese game that I wish-wish-wish was released here, Metal Wolf Chaos is it.
As for the OP: I'm *pretty* sure the arcade game had images of the band members' heads on the sprites, and used a cassette tape to play the actual music.

Yeah, I played it too. Sort of a racing game with music, IIRC... moving left and right to avoid obstacles.

Yeah, that's right on the money. The band members' bodies were sprites, but their heads were taken as black-and-white photographs while on an actual tour.
As for the music, during a concert sequence in the game a looped version of "Separate Ways" is played through the cassette player.
