Hey,
This might sound a little foolish, but I have never designed a publication with a spine. We are using Adobe Pagemaker. How do we do this and integrate it into the file, or is it done seperately.

Any takers?

You need to know how many pages the book will be, and then ask the binder what kind of gutter they need for the cover. This is the only real concern that a spine influences.

Otherwise, just make sure that text and important graphics are offset at least 10mm from the binding edge. The other concerns are a bit too much to go into, such as imposition sections, and these will normally be handled by the printer, so they're not really your concern.

You will need to know what you gutter size is (this simply translates into margin size). The spine is dictated by your printer based on the number of pages.

Your front cover will have an amount of bleed as well, also determined by the printer's press tolerence (usually no more than 1/8").

You should also keep in mind type tolerence (forget the term right off hand). This is the measurement from the cutlines (exterior print area (not including the bleed) that the printer suggests you place text to gaurantee it is not trimmed off when the cover is cut.

Hope that helps.

Cheers!
